Need Help With Bald Edges

Jut to verify, hair is growing in those areas, but it breaks off easily. Is that correct?

I would apply the castor oil *by itself* unmixed every other day and do 10 minute massages in those areas daily for a few months and see if theres any improvement.

I have exactly the same problem and I am finally seeing growth(fingers crossed)´.
What I believe helped is leaving that area completely alone, no relaxers, no tension on or around that area. I recently started using castor oil, and wetting the area frequently with a spritz(rosewater and glycerin mix) before lightly massaging the oil in. Be careful with the massages, I have found that they did more harm than good.

Also, try hair-dos that limit the tension around that area.

Good luck!

Adjust the way you sleep. I have a mild hearing loss in my right ear so the majority of the time I sleep on my right side. I noticed that my right hair line was thinner than the left side so I started to sleep on my left side or my back to give my right hair line a break. After about two months I noticed some improvement.

I second what locabouthair and BlackMasterPiece said about the massages. If your hair is breaking are you having moisture issues.

How are you wearing you hair, my I had my hair in kinky twist and wore my hair in a ponytail all the time the middle and back was growing like crazy and the sides were thinning out so I am giving my hair a rest from the twists.

I feel your pain because I am going through the same thing right now and I am desperate for my edges to grow back that has also been bald for years. I am using Nioxin follicle booster and I have been using it for about a month and I am waiting on progress patiently.

Instead of massaging per say, I'd rub, lightly. Just take your finger tips, close your eyes, and smooth them over your edges, don't massage in a circular motion cause I find this eventually breaks the hair off or thins it out. So just smooth your edges with slight tension to get the warmed massage effect.

I've batteled with thin/weak edges for most of my relaxed life, but lately (recent 2-3 yrs) things have been pretty good. Some things that I think are helping are 1) my use of supplements (biotin, msm, silica, multivitamin, and omegas). These guys hae just made me hairier in general:) 2) A big help (and a tip I picked up in a similar thread) is using lots of moisturizer and sealing (like ways more than normal) right on edges b4 putting on scarf and going to sleep. The theory here is that all that nighttime contact with scarf creates lots of friction on the edges making breakage more likely in that area. I always moisturized and sealed there (after joining Lhcf), but paying special attention to that area right b4 sleep has really helped a lot. Not sure how u sleep but try that if you use a scarf. Also for sealing in that area oils with rosemary, sulfur, and/or peppermint have helped me more with my edges. HTH

I am having a similar problem I just posted a thread on this, I wish I would have found this one first.

Locabouthair: I do message them everyday and they grow back and fall out like every 6 months. I did get briads again 2 months ago and thats what pulled them out again.

Lady S: Yeah hair is growing but kinda. There's hair in the front but bald right behind it and then hair again. I'll post a picture of what I'm trying to say.

BlackMasterPiece: Okay. I'll try that. But the Dr. Miracles does wonders for my hair it has helped me grow longer hair.

Ajoke: I don't get perms at all. And what I do is I get full weaves and don't get the sides braided at all so that I can message and apply oil to them. But I will try using the rosemary water. Thanks!

MizComplexity: I did have braids 2 months agos and I have been wearing my hair pressed and flat iron because I cant put my hair in a ponytail with out sides lol.

Caramelma: Tell me how it goes I need all the help I can get.

Geminigirl: Thanks because I message real hard because I think that pushes the oil in lol.

Adoraadora24: How do I use the mega tek do I use it like oil and leave it in my hair or just as a conditioner before I wash my hair?

Lava24: I'm going to try those oils because I keep hearing alot about rosemary oil.

Nique3: I have been reading post but none of them were from this year and I really need help too.

I see what you are talking about but I wish I had that much hair on my edges, shoot girl my edges are T Totally Bald lol.

My edges looked just like yours from tight weaves nonstop in highschool. I too sturggled to grow them back but it always seemed to only work temporarily. However I think I have found what works for me...my edges are filling in and I feel comfortable enough to actually show them. What has worked for me is:
1. I stopped relaxing...October will be two years since I have put any type of chemical on my edges
2. I moisturize daily and deep condition at the minimum 3 days a week
3. No tension on that area...
4. Sleeping on a silk pillow case instead of wearing a silk head scarf
5. I leave it alone...ie. No massaging or constantly touching that area

I used mtg in the past and it worked well but the hair fell out after a few months. I don't think growth aids are really necessary.

Hope I helped.

I agree with the ladies that have posted ....sounds like this area of your hair is being made weak and needs more moisture(very possibly protein and just more all around TLC) FOR SURE when you get it back and growing in properly. I've had the problem and just like they've said i tried everything but MT. And i think my slow growth has now been from the fricion of my scarf BUT..my edges are noticeably back and in full effect!

ETA: I used m-t-g, essential oils, ayurveda & castor oils with success...BUT do your homework (meaning search this forum and everywhere you can for info on what to use and how to use it)They are thicker than my siggy pic & this was /is my thinner side.

ms. Tatiana I agree with everything previously said here! You should also check out the Knockout nape and edges challenge. im a part of it and its all about trying to bring back our healthy edges and nape and see how much growth we get within 1 year.

Caramelma: Thats how I was no hair at all it took me months to grow that and then I got braids and pulled it again now I'm just over braids that don't have a side part.

Jaded Faerie: Thanks. I don't have enough sides to make pony tail no more and I used to have that so I'm going to try to keep up with my sides.

BlaqBella: You can't even tell you had a problem with your side from looking at that picture. I'm going to keep looking for stuff but what you used worked so I'll check those products out too.

Pringe: I am going to see if I can join that challenges because it looks like it will help me out. Thanks!

Ms Tatiana, had that problem with my chronic use of braids. Out of all my hair on my head, I've found my edges to be the dryest so I try to keep it moisturized often and baby it when combing or brushing. I smooth a little conditioner with olive/carrot oil on my edges every other day. On occasion, I'll get a clean wash rag, soak it in warm water and put it over my head/edges for a few minutes before putting my wrap on at night. Taking vitamin E has also helped with my dryness too.

Note: I know it's expensive but try wearing braids no longer then 1-2 months plus try using the conditioner on your edges. Don't worry about build up during the week - You can add a little shampoo on a towel and gently rub/wash the edges then follow with a dab of conditioner. Also another option is to learn to braid so that you can control the tightness and can take out the braids once a month to gave the hair a break.

ITA with the bolded...and i just noticed(could be wrong) but are your installs tight.B/C if you like them really tight that could be another problem. So you might have to start getting them looser where your having trouble at (edges,etc.)BTW..THANK YOU for the compliment & your hair is PRETTY..looks very helathy but your edges look like you might just need to step up the MOISTURE/protein(strenthening:henna,something) & loosen up the styles in that area.
Wish the best sweetie.HHG!

Like she said use a moisturizing cond...anything that you know does that for YOUR hair more often in that area.

^I agree about the braids. That's why my edges are in trouble. I used to get braids in the summer, but I stopped after I straightened my hair & saw how thin it was. I don't get braids at all anymore.

I've been using BeeMine & BT (but mostly BeeMine) since January, and I honestly don't see a difference. My husband says that he does, though.

Ms. Tatiana, the pictures that you posted look like my edges on the right side.

She-Ra: I did what you said today I used the Mega Tek as my conditioner and left it in for 2 hours and took a shower and washed my sides and then put olive oil on it. Thanks!!

Blaqbella: The braids I had were tight again like really tight. I found a picture of them I went to a shop because I know if I went to just any braided they would have left my sides out and had me looking stupid but the lady at the shop knew how to grab all my hair lol.

DarlingDiva:I get braids from the summer too its to hot for a press and a weave on my head. I seen another post of a lady using bee mine but that post was from like 2006. Why don't you think its working? Is the process to slow? Because you want hair now, just like me.

Good thread - I am suffering from the same issues OP so hope the following tips help:

I have this issue bc of braiding and weaving for years. Things that I have noticed are helping (this issue will not resolve its self overnight - it took time to happen so will take time to resolve):

1. No edges Massages please. This actually makes the situations worse. Trust me on this one. Instead pour a teaspoon of JBCO into a dish and dab your fingers into that and "press" this lightly into your temples.
2. Do try MT bc what I have found is that some people incl myself are pre-disposed to weak edges and so we need to be extra vigilant. MT will help strengthen the hair in this area therefore making it less pre-disposed to break when it grows out. The flip-side , you have to condition and moisturise like a beast.
3.Moisturise and condition like a beast otherwise any hair that is growing will just snap and break off as it's so fragile.
4. Only comb "lightly" any hair in this area when properly moisturised. If you notice tiny baby hairs in your comb when handling this area this gently or you may be pulling out the newly growing hairs.
5. I found that traction alopecia goes hand in hand with follicular infections so hence why JBCO works so well bc it's mildly antiseptic and astringent so keep the scalp in this area clean and nourished. You could co wash your edges as you shower 2 -3 times a week to make sure the already weak follicles are not being subjected to more abuse. JBCO and other growth aids are great for this area.
6. Quit, relaxing, blow-drying and applying any traction to this area, just let it rest. If you had another part of your body which was subject to stress you would not stress it further but rather be very gentle with it. Same applies.
7. You might reconsider wearing as scarf at night as someone else stated but rather bunning/ baggying your ends in a silk/ satin scarf (Sikh style) and then just sleeping on a silk pillowcase.

^ Good post. I've been moisturizing, applying castor oil and so on, but I had always wondered if my scarf was doing more harm than good. I'm probably going to get a satin pillow case and see how that works out.

PositivelyRadinat: You are so right about me missing with my hair instead of leaving it alone. And at this moment I have a full weave with just a piece out in the front and that part is in braids. My sides are not braided into the weave and this morning I applied Mega Tek to my sides for 2 hours then wash it out and put JBCO on them. I am going to wash them more too just like you said because I keep hearing that works. I haven't had relaxer in my hair in 4 years and I won't get another one. And no messaging lol I'll try not to do it any more and I don't brush my hair on the sides at all.

D.N.A: I know. Now I believe my pretty wrap silk tie up isn't what I should be using to wrap my hair up at night but I have a weave in so I need to put something on it I just don't know what.

These are the braids I in Jan 2010 I had the ponytail for like a month.
tightbraids.jpg

Those braids look really tight from the pic. To the bolded, that is your problem right there. You let them grab every little hair and braid it up. That is not good for your edges. All you are doing is more damage. I would much rather leave my edges out than to worry about looking stupid. If you don't, you may permanently damage them.

Hmm... I don't even know what to tell you. Perhaps, for the time being, try not to tie it too tight... at least until you can find a better alternative. I have a scarf and a bonnet, so lately I've switched to the bonnet and made sure it doesn't rest on my hairline. I'm not sure if that's any better though. lol

Kellum: Yeah I know. I ended up still looking stupid because those braids pulled out the hair I had just grew. But I won't be getting braids like that again any time soon. When I got home from getting them done my mom was saying that they looked a little to tight.

DNA: You know what my step mom gave me a magic scarf with built in satin conditioner I think I'm gone try that tonight.
