So I took out a nice weave that I had in for 2 months. Everything was fine after taking out the braids. My hair was still moisturized and crimped. It was pretty. I applied some mega-tek/ oil mixtures and massaged my scalp, not touching my ends. After about 30 minutes, I took a shower, washed and conditioned my hair. Not once did I comb it out with the fear that too much hair would come out. Everything seemed perfectly fine in the shower. It was soft and manageable. I got out and air dried and after 20 minutes or so, i started to comb out my hair but noticed that my hair matted into two huge dreds!! :nono: I went back in the water, applied half a bottle of vo5 conditioner and some amla oil and the matt would NOT come out. There was absolutely no hope. I felt like the more i rubbed the hair to get them untangled, the more damage i was doing to each strand. So...I did the unthinkable! I chopped it all off (sniff sniff). I was not even prepared to go natural but hey, now i have the opportunity to try it out. After all, I am 3 months post. I just need to get it cleaned up nicely.

Anyway, I am very very sad and feel lost and empty without my hair. I LOVE long hair and on top of that, I dont think I have the face for short hair. So Im now on a natural hair journey. I will be rocking my new $200 lace front (rediculous price) along with some weaves until my hair is at a comfortable length.

Below are pics of my cut and a pic of my new lacefront. I will keep you posted on my progress. Please feel free to share any tips on taking care of 4a/b natural hair. I must say that I am in love with African Royal braid sheen. It makes my hair soft and manageable enough to run a rat tail comb through it. :yep:

Welcome to the natural side. Sorry it was such a traumatic and unexpected transition but you turned it into something positive.

:yep:

I'm sorry to hear that! :(
There is a wealth of information here about caring for your natural hair. I'm also glad you're taking it fairly well and making lemonade from those lemons

I just realized you said that was a lacefront! Looks great, I thought it was your relaxed hair "before chop"

Aaaawww man, i know the feeling. Last summer I had a weave in for about 2 months to get me through the summer. I normally do not where weaves or braids, but i was transitioning and soo fed up with my hair. Well i took it out, and TOTALLY forgot about getting the shed hairs out first before i wash it. As soon as it hit the water it dreaded up on me. My hair dresser was able to detangle me, but i also had that fear of being cut.

But anywho, enjoy being natural. I can't wait to get 100% natural like you!

That same thing happened to me in 2008. After I took out my weave and didn't detangle thinking that the water will melt my tangles but left me with huge dreds. I had to bc and now I'm natural and loving it. Don't worry it would grow back longer and healthier.

Oh no! Well, you learned a valuable lesson... detangle FIRST. One braid at a time, after oiling your hair 6 ways from Sunday. Oil gives slip that nothing else can. THEN and only then should you wash.

Since you wanted to go natural anyway, it's not a tragedy... the lacefront is cute. Before you know it, your natural hair will pass the length you had before. :yep:

Wow! Some people told me I shouldve went to the salon but I just had the feeling they were going to cut it anyway. The dominicans in my area are scissor happy. Lucky you!

You didn't see Ateyaa's video?

Anyway, I'm sorry that happened to you. But now you can be Natural and have this new experience! Enjoy it and try not to think about the hair that you lost because it doesn't matter anymore.

You can make this a good thing (If you were thinking of going natural).

Family here to encourage you (yes ladies we are sisters :yep:)
