Am I Cheating...

Sounds like u need a wax type product to lay your edges down. granier frutis has one and so does bed head. combined with the scarf method, it works wonders

Personally, I like smoother lines better, even as a lover of curly hair. It just looks neater. There's nothing wrong with that preference (or yours!) Not to mention, for me, there are regs on how I'm allowed to have my hair at work, and so it has to look semi-professional and tamed, and so it's pretty important for my overall hair bun/updo.

Lol please dont tell me the white man's military has you brainwashed? Natural hair can be tame AND professional. I've worn twist outs to work and no one has ever said my hair looks unkept or unprofessional. Not even the stuck up Chiefs we have walking around my base.

If you are comfortable with it. Go for it. But a good creamy moisturizer and ecostyler gel works wonders on my daughters 4a hair.

Thank You! Thank You! Thank You, Sade!! I was just thinking about this today. I really haven't tried anything to lay my edges down (except the curling iron...I guess that's why they are so thin) but now I have a few things to try before I relax.

This is exactly what happens. I plan to go natural then I decide...well maybe I will just touch up the edges but I end up doing my whole head!! I'm 12 weeks post so I'm going to try:

Murray's
Let's Jam (I think this is the black gel people were referring to, if not please let me know)
Garnier Fructis Wax
Eco
water aloe vera gel and Let's Jam
Hicks
Liz and Daughters (I'm not sure where to find this? anyone have a website?)

Have I forgotten anything before I go back to the creamy crack? (I'm willing to try multiple things before...well you know)

Thanks Sade for asking the question and thanks everyone else for your responses!!:grin:

Ur welcome! Check out my latest pics! AND I used a toothbrush! Worked wonders...

Try Hicks Edges.... it's like a pomade/gel/wax formula and it lays my edges down and all of my friends too. I am sure this will work for you.

Sade, all of the gels that you mentioned have a very light hold. I too use the brown/black gels and it slicks back my hair nicely. I don't even need to use a lot of gel either.

If you relax your edges you're not cheating you're just prolonging your transition to natural. I had a hard time laying down my edges when I was transitioning. I would either rollerset and flatiron or I would wet my hair, add a leave-in and use black gel to slick my hair back.

Once I did the BC I didn't have any problems laying down my edges.

for those using the garnier fructis wax, which type because ive seen 3 different wax products. thanks

Thanks Boston Maria! I purchased some brown gel yesterday. I will be using that most likely the next time I wash my hair, That's where the prob lies; when it's wet. I can slick it when it has been straightened even better now that I found the product that I posted earlier in this thread. But I am on a personal MINIMAL heat challenge.

Re: Am I Cheating...w/ **PICS**

Girl it looks great! Good job in doing it and better job in researching to find a solution other than the chemical. By the way, is your hair straigthened or are you transitioning and have a lot of straight ends?

Thanks BrownBean96! I was on a critical mission last night, and found my answer in Bed Bath & Beyond's cosmetic/hair section!

I began transitioning in September 2007, cut my hair in June 2008 (see my avatar) and kept cutting it off gradually up until August 2009. I still have a few ends that are straight b/c of the angled bob. Now my hair is about 90% transitioned. My ends in the back STILL look str8! Maybe heat damage. Who knows.

Yes I got my hair done last Thursday. Wash, blow dry & curled.

Garnier Fructis Brilliantine Water Based Wax.

Small, flat round green jar shaped like a tobacco can. The other 2 are putty.

Sade' (since we are experiencing the same problem - see my thread too http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=455358&highlight= ) the Garnier Fructis Strye Brilliantine shine - Water based shie wax DOES WORK....but just not long enough for me. By the middle of the day, it's looking a little scraggly back there. But my edges in the fron hold up very well. It's the best product I have used for my edges thus far, it doesn't build up either......but seriously, I am tired of waxin up my neckline everyday... let me know what you decide to do or if you find any better products.

Hi Lady Lu! I posted some pics earlier in this thread of the product I found yesterday and my results. Check 'em out!

Softsheen Edge Tamer..... I will definately be going out to try this today....well see what it can do with my hair :) Where did you find it? Is it at the local drug store....or do I need to go to a Beauty Supply store?

Yes. To be more specific its Dark & Lovely for Kids, so go to the kids section. I found it at Bed Bath & Beyond. I am sure Target & CVS has it. I am going over there later to check. I def need to stock up on it. My hair is STILL in place and it's 3:00pm.

My hair is STILL in place and it's 3:00pm:lachen: too funny. That sounds just like me. I just left the bathroom doing a brush touchup.

Nice results Sade. I went looking for the edge tamer but I couldn't find it. I did the store locator thing but the beauty store closest to me was closed. I didn't feel like going across town so I went to the next closest store and bought some Just for Me Smoothing Gel. I got it because it has Keratin proteins "to strengthen little girls fragile hair strands" ...hey if it works for little girls it should work for me .

oh pleaseee, relax your edges if you want tooo, who the hell cares if its cheating or not cheating, as long as your happy with how YOUR hair looks.

I agree do what you want to do. Who or what are you cheating on? I personally think it might look odd as the front continue to grow out but do what you want. Will you still be natural- technically no. So you have to decide what's most important.

On my natural hair if I relax my edges? I just want a smoother looking bun. I don't mind the rest of my hair being coarse I just like smooth edges. NOTHING and I do mean NOTHING lays my edges down.

ECO STYLER PROTEIN STYLING GEL (aka brown gel)
74837800104_220x220_a.jpg

No cones, lanolin or mineral oil (a.k.a paraffin).
Trust me, a few slabs of this and your edges will lay down. I also suggest using a brush like this one on your edges if you wanna 'smooth' it out.
images
It's called the denman brush.
I also suggest slapping on a little olive oil or some oil to seal your hair before you apply it and yes you'll end up with hard hair at the end of the day so try doing this when your hair is a bit damp because wet hair tends to stretch a more , so when that dries after you've slapped that gel in, your pony tail will get tighter and thus... headaches

Oh btw, I've got a perm. :look:

Oh a little tip, before bed you can always sprit your hair with a little water, add a little more oil, then tie on your silk scarf, the next morning your edges will still be smoothed down, toss it up in a ponytail again and viola you're good to rock it another day, I still live by this bunning style :yep: I can go a whole week like that and if I'm gonna skip my weekly dts, I do the same thing for another week. Detangling is a hassle but meh, wearing a hairstyle that takes me 5 mins every morning for 2 weeks is worth it.

Thanks StellaData! Where do I find a Denman?

I didn't mean it in the literal sense. I was just looking for support & suggestions. I know in the back of my mind that I really didn't wanna revert back to relaxers. I found my solution. I posted pics a few messages ago.

Hey LadyLu, CVS did not have the Edge Tamer & Protector. I will go back to BB&B and stock up. And I am going to check Target tonight.
