Unbelievable 4b Natural that actually has defined curls

Type 4 hair denotes that it doesn't have a pattern. Many people are quick to call themselves type 4 because their hair is very dense.

I think that girl is 3C.

Sorry did not know if was a repost. Please put the link here so I can look at the thread. That is a 3C then what is a 4b? Are you looking at the before hair?

'this is my kinky, kinky, dry, rough, tangled up bush; i mean this is just as tough as you get. its just cotton. then you get that beautiful thick hair into this gorgeous, defined, shiny glossy, defined curls that gets lotsa compliments.

whaa?

anyway, she looks like a 4a. and i didn't know people still used black hair gel. it looks good on her though.

and i'm scared as hell of her usin that scary brush on type 4 hair. ♥

It states on the YouTube video that she considers herself a 4a/4b. To say she is just a 4b is sort of misleading, IMO.

The girl in OP's original post is a 4a hence her spirals. Sera whom is one of my biggest hair idols (and a member here - love your hair Sera). Is a 4b hence the more zig-zaggy curls which she beautifully defines in this vid.

I am a combination of the two of these ladies. For some odd reason I have 4a dispersed through out my head for no particular reason and more so since I started taking MSM.

Zigzaggy curls? If you stretch any coil, it looks zigzag. Sera's coil are no different from mine IMO or any other spirals. The only difference between Sera's coils and type 3 is hers her tiny. The clay is stretching the coils out so that they look zigzaggy just like any stretched out spring.

So now 4a doesn't have a pattern either, huh? Y'all are confusing with this hair typing mess. I consider myself predominately a 4a and I very much have a curl pattern even without being defined with a product. My curls just aren't large in diameter.

yeah, there was a thread on her before. i def didn't like the way she talked about her own hair like that.

Of course 4B has coils. I have 4B and I do have coils.

BTW if y'all want to see 4B hair that'll make you drool (coz it's so long and beautiful) and that at the same time shows coils, check out our member Sera's hair: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwlWALUgQLI

Beautiful thick hair. Ok, maybe the other girl is 4A. Bentonite made my hair dry(maybe because I was using it a few weeks after Henna). Does Bentonite create curls?

Nice results (she has more patience than me to spend 3 hours doing it :lachen:). Her hair looks 4A to me.

No, I think it clarifies.

I think 4B hair if completely free of product and if well moisturized (DCing, I mean, ie internal moisture) and not manipulated (combed, braided, etc) will form coils.

I never saw my own coils until I stopped using 198437749874 products on my hair. I don't even use products on my hair yet if I wet it and then let it dry unmanipulated, it keeps the coils it had from being wet. We just can't leave 4B hair in its defined form coz we'd not be able to comb it. The size of the coils makes it very easy to tangle. Hence the reason we keep it stretched and in its "manipulated" state where it looks like it has no pattern.

Nonie ITU where you are coming from. The point I am trying to make however is that Sera's "curls" look more zig-zaggy to the eye precisely bc they are more stretched and elongated as opposed to tightly spiralled in the case of 4a's like the lady in OP's post. This I know bc I have looked at my own hairs close up and this is what I can see with my naked eyes. Some of my hairs without a doubt are more tightly curled into a spiral whilst others are more randomly zig zag curled. At the end of the day IMO there are different types of curly just as there are different types of straight (poker & kinky) and wavy (loose waves, loose curls).

Anyway on that note, both ladies have beautiful hair IMO. This is the beauty and diversity of hair.

Exactly! I thought the only difference between a 3c,4a,4b was the diameter of the curl. I remember someone on the board posting that that it goes: 3c=sharpie to pencil 4a=pencil to pen spring 4b=penspring and smaller (but still a very small spiral)...it was something like that. Someone correct me if I'm off.

IA. Leaving my hair in a WNG is a beautiful-nightmare. I love seeing my hair in its natural, un-manipulated form but trying to rock the style for more than a day turns into a tangled disaster.

i've read that bentonite & henna residue left behind just weighs the hair down to the point that a 4b coil loosens up into a 4a coil...is that true?

:ohwell:

NO way I"m spending that long doing a styles that probably will only last a couple of days. It looks nice though. I'm comfortable w/my thick, kinky bushy hair. And also you have to naturally have a curl pattern to do that. My hair is pretty curly and I think it would do that but that is just tooooo time consuming.

But you're looking at her hair when it's got a heavy product on it. If a 4A person put the same product on their hair, it'd look just the same, only the waves would be bigger.

Thank you for posting OP, I've never seen her yt vids before and I've always wanted to know how ppl defined there coils.

:ohwell:

I've heard about henna changing texture but I don't know for sure.

I don't think bentonite clay loosens 4B hair because my hair looks exactly like Sera, save the length  , and I've never used either henna or bentonite clay.

Also, I don't think the difference between 4A and 4B is a looser curl. I think 4A has bigger curls than 4B so that they easily "spoon" each other and create a clear definition that can be seen from far. 4B coils are so small that they don't fit inside each other with ease so you get more of a cottony look than a look of clear coils. Think of how easy it is to see a bold print from afar and not so easy to see fine point. By 4A coils combining easily, they form a bold coil that stands out from far.

I think OP's girl is a 4A myself, but 4A/4B is category I can never really pinpoint so she may be that too.

amen:yep::yep:

OK, to further clarify how a weighty product can change the appearance of coils while it's on the hair and stretching it, I took a section of my hair and wet it letting it dry unmanipulated. Then took one part and applied conditioner to weigh it down. :giggle: It was nothing like clay and the closest thing would've been using flour but I'm not about to start trying crazy stuff on my hair w/o knowing what that'll do.

Anyway, hope the pics clarify a bit. The section to our left is w/o product while that on the right is coated with conditioner to "simulate" the effect of clay or a heavy product on 4B hair:

i watched the video and she twisted her hair at the end in small sections. i forgot what thats called but iv seen a lot of 4b people do it.....if she was defining her curl its shouldnt have taken her 100 strokes of her brush and twisting it. all i need to to is shingle. PLUS i didnt like the way she was talking down 4 hair like she was too good to have it...
