How long does it take you to do your whole head? What’s your technique? I swear I stared Friday night and wasn't done until Sunday night. It took me forever!!! :wallbash: But I got every split end, SSN and crooked end in my head . My hair feels sooooooo nice! I swear S&D will save your hair.

I dunno, when I see one split end I get goose bumps all over my body and I get itchy. Splits creep me out. So I had to get them ALLLLLLLL!!!!!!

It means Search and Destroy. That's when you examine each individual strand of hair and inspect it for a split end or a single strand knot. You keep your length but get rid of the splits.
Wow that sounds very time consuming, so what do you do when you find the split or not, do you cut it of???:perplexed:perplexed:perplexed

Yes it is very time consuming. When you find the split or knot you just cut above it. Thats why they call it search and detroy lol it is a mission!

:lachen: I've yet to do one. I've told myself that once all of my hair is long enough that I can see the ends without having to use heat to straighten them, I'll do one. I'm really not looking forward to it.

it takes me about 2 or 3 days to do a S&D but I always tend to find a couple I missed when braiding my hair after a wash. There are times I do S&D when I'm bored but I'm trying to limit the amount of time I put scissors to my hair cuz I'm trying to grow my hair but I don't like splits or ssks.

you what, come to think of it...the last time I did this it took a day and a half and my hair was flatironed then. This time my hair was not straight just stretched in its natural state (pig tails). So maybe thats why it too so long???

Okay now I dont feel so out of wack. It just took so long this time to do it. And I wasn't taking any breaks really.

Im going to give this a try maybe when i straighten my hair, but that wont be for a couple of months....

S&D missions take like a week for me. My hair strands are on the fine side, but I have 90 kagillion of them. So it is really work for me to go through strand by strand. It's the only way to go for me, though. I cannot see cutting off perfectly healthy hair just to catch the splits and SSKs (aka a trim) plus I will NOT be letting anyone other than me myself and I in this head.

Many people would have just hacked my ends off last time I did a S&D. But I stuck with it, and got to keep my length while improving the health of my hair.

The only way to do it (on curly hair) is after a flat ironing. Doing it on texlaxed/natural heads without straightening it first is insanity.

I usually do S&D on my hair in it's natural state b/c I don't straighten my hair often. I noticed my hair was slightly uneven last time I did straighten my hair though so that could be a reason:nono:

i have a question for those of you that do s&d... over time have you found that ur ends look weird/noticeably uneven b/c some of the splits are at different levels/lengths of your hair?

im on a no trim regime right now.. and i just want to make sure i'm not gonna ruin my hair. i dont want to get a 'w' but i cut the ones i see and hope im not thinning my length or making some weird shape at the ends in the process.....

Not yet I have only done this three times total. So far no, because MY splits are never go up the shaft *knocks on wood*. So far they range from 1/8" to less than a 1/2" from the ends.

OMG.....*sighs hard*....it takes me about an hour a day for about a week when I use Traycee's method. Her method is the best for me btw. Super time consuming but very effective.

Unfortunately I can get a split if I look at my hair too hard, lol....so it seems I'm always doing S&D's. I'm glad I'm not the only one that takes a lot of time to do it.

My hair is a little longer than APL and I was having such a time doing S&D on the back of my head. So that's when I bought the Split Ender which seemed to work fine....I hope. I really like the idea of doing it by hand better, but how can I possible do the back?

Do you find that this works helps your hair more than just dusting the ends? I keep telling myself that I'm going to do this but I just don't have the time right now to inspect all of my strands of hair so I've just been dusting on occasion.

See this is why the method doesn't work for me, I can't see the nape of my neck nor can I physically cut it.

yeah my hair gets splits super easy, but i have some 'old' relaxed hair that has the splits pretty high up and thats where i cut them :perplexed.

i do s & ds like everyday lol... whenever i have a piece of hair out - at work, at home, i have a pair of hair scissors in my car, my bathroom and bedroom, and in my purse - i am alittle psycho about it lol

yep these things take forever...but they do save length, which is the ONLY reason why i do it. too time consuming & tedious!

What is Traycee's method?

I don't think my ends look weird or uneven... but even if they did *shrugs* Hair grows in unevenly anyway. When I see people who are so obsessed with keeping their ends blunt or in a v, u, etc... those people have a real hard time keeping any length. For ME, I want to get to my goal length, with healthy happy hair. Anything else is not a priority; not styling, not shape, nothing.

They are rather time consuming..I think my biggest worry is ending up with uneven jacked up hair ...and for the fact that I can't see the back of my head or erks me..

It generally takes me a couple of days, over the course of a weekend. And when I do a S & D, I'm on a mission. I've literally spent hours attacking anything that I thought could potentially be a split end. I part my hair in six section, S&D each section, and then I will go back over my entire head and search for splits until I wash out my press. I normally do an intensive S&D like this every 3-4 months on average and maintain in between. Since I've been practicing very low manipulation by wearing wigs and washing/DCing once a week, I've only notice 2 or 3 splits since December. I'm hoping that maybe I can go even longer between them to retain more length, but I love nice thick healthy ends :lick:

I forgot to mention, for the nape and back of my hair, I use a 5x magnifying mirror. I also hold my hair up to a light source (preferably a natural one), in order to see where a split has occured
