Are your ends split or damaged? If not, why would you need to trim?

i have a few splits and single strand knots... but i still dont want to trim.:look:

i know, i know... i should be ashamed of myself for saying that, now that i belong to LHCF and all :perplexed.

anybody else hate trimming? im just so happy that i reached my goal and now i have to take it away :nono::nono:.

I hate to trim also. I have doing the search & destroy method but out of boredom one day I started trimming. My mom came to my apt and had to stop me!

Just do search and destroy. That way you get rid of the few bad ends (i.e. the single strand knots, few splits, etc) you have in the bunch and you can keep your length. Unless you have a lot of damaged ends I wouldn't bother with a trim. I haven't trimmed since...I don't remember when & my ends are just fine. I had a single strand knot a few weeks back and I trimmed that one & left the rest of my hair alone.

i would love to know this too, because I haven't trimmed for exactly a year as of today, and I purchased hair shears yesterday with a humongous feeling of guilt, but haven't touched them yet.

do i really really need to trim?

I don't want to trim either, but I think I may just dust a tiny bit so that my ends looks somewhat straight and even when I straighten my hair. I don't plan on ANY real trims ever. I don't think it's necessary for me since my hair is always braided up in a ps. I may only straighten once or twice a year.

I can't remember the name of the lady who has hip length hair and hadn't trimmed in like 10 years. I'll try to find her website and post. I was convinced that I really didn't need to trim after seeing her hair.

Ok, I found it. Her name is Teri here's her site, http://www.tightlycurly.com/welcome/.

Cathy Howse did: http://www.ultrablackhair.com/

I think so long as your split ends are few, you can get away with not trimming. Search and destroy, as someone else mentioned, is a good alternative.

However, if one's ends are really damaged, is it better to trim than to hold onto to them in the long run.

hmm i dont want to trim and i get splits and slk. they'll work themselves out. my natural hair knots around itself so much that unless it's straight i will have split ends. it's just a way of life for me. my hair grows and i retain length so obviously my splits are not damaging my hair tremendously.
meh..we'll see

Interesting...I've been struggling with this for 2 months. I even bought my shears a few weeks back. I realized that I don't have splits or serious damage. My ends do look a tad bit "used" so i will dust. I haven't had a trim msince last May and since moisturizing and sealing my ends my hair don't break off really. So I guess...
Whatever is best for you.
Adora, I'd dust and see how that turns out. You can always come back and trim if need be.

Backwhen i was relaxed i used to trim my hair every 4 to 6 weeks, just because i really love my ends as healthy as possible, and because i was always on a short style that was very hard to maintain ( i had short hair by option for over 7 years, yes all my teen years xD).

Anyway people see that pointless if your hair is not damage, i understand that but i'm a scissors freak. Now i have since my BC that i don't really trim my hair, i'm just letting it grow and i will trim when my hair reach a decent lenght, and i will go with an stylist to do it, even i'm scared i hate stylist here :/

I did a trim back in September 09 and I regretted it. I'm not going to even think about dusting until Dec. 2011. And that will only be a thought. My hair is pretty even and my goal is to pamper these ends so that they will never split or require a cut. Wishing thinking but this is my goal.

I like to dust frequently, it just makes my ends feel better, but I havent done a real trim in over a year. I was supposed to let my stylist do it, but I was so in love with my new length after she relaxed it...i told her never mind!

I despise trimming too but the lack of it is what caused me to only be grazing APL for one day back in '08. My ends were thin, raggedy looking, and even the split ends had split ends lol. I was bad about trimming though, I think my last trim then was my BC...i am shamed. Now I try to do it every 2 months if I'm manipulating everyday via co-washing, but since I've adopted my low manipulation braid out regimen I'm now 3 months post trim and my ends look and feel great.

well i had a trim in October '09.. and I still dont have any split ends as of yet.. and before that I had a trim in Aug '08, and it took me a year after to get another trim. And my ends were in great shape... maybe because i dont wear my hair out and moisturize them.
So no I dont think you have to get a trim to reach your goals

I don't think you necessarily have to trim as long as your ends are being well taken care of. I am not trimming until I reach MBL and then I will start trimming to cut out relaxed hair and to get a blunt cut. I hate my layers. But I do check my ends and I don't see any splits. But if I do see splits, I will search and destroy and not do a big trim. Try the search and destroy Adora.

I hardly ever trim. Actually I think the last time was right after my BC. That's almost a year. It never stopped my hair from getting to goals. I think I would trim if it was really bad.

I know when I get SSK it's because I have been lazy with moisturizing. So I do Search and Destroys and call it a day.

i have a great stylist that i only see 2-4 times a yr to flat iron and length check....if i don't need a dusting she doesn't do it, she reminds me that since i do wigs that it is low manipulation which equals retaining length....i can't wait till june!!

I think it's possible. :yep: I usually do a search and destroy, but I plan to get a nice trim in a couple of months. I plan to get a sew in soon and will probably get my hair professionally trimmed after I take it out.

I dont think you have to trim unless you have split or damaged hair. Yup, Cathy Howse did say that trimming all the time isnt necessary. I havent trimmed in a year. I dont have any split ends or damaged hair. I think it has a lot to do with not using blow dryers and other heat appliances on my hair. My hair is pretty even too.

Good advice ladies. I think that the last time I did a trim was when I got my hair wacked off by a stylist. That was in September. I've been PS since then and moisturizing and sealing nightly. I did a blow out on Wednesday and my ends didn't really look that bad, so I won't be checking again until May. In between time, I'll just dust if I see any little crazies :)

:look:
I haven't had a trim since 2002. I only do search & destroy.
I may not have perfect ends, but it hasn't hindered my growth.
I think if I got one good trim and continued the healthy hair practices I'm currently using, I would never have to trim again.

I think the ultimate goal should be to stay on top of your ends and make sure they're in ideal condition so that you can trim as rarely as possible.

I recently got a trim and I hate getting it done but it was necessary, I do trims like once a year, I want to extend that to every year and a half with really good hair practices

I don't think you have to trim to reach your goals. For me personally, I trim with every relaxer which comes out to 3 times a year. My ends are prone to splits and S&Ds are not enough to get all of them. Besides my hair was thinning due to heat damage from the Dominican salon I went to so I'm gradually trimming those off.

If your ends are not damaged then you don't need it but trimming makes your ends look neater imo.

Meh. I don't really bank too much on what Cathy Howse does. I mean, by her own admission it took her like 8 years to get from what, EL to MBL? I did that in a little over 2 years. So if anything *I* should be giving *her* hair advice.

Now that we got that out of the way, lol. I think it all depends on how you want your ends to look. I have done two massive S&Ds within this year. It took like a week because I DID have serious splits. But I refuse to just trim, I want to keep all of my length! So I went through strand by strand and trimmed off JUST the damaged parts. When you trim, you are losing length that has NO damage on it... which I flat out refuse to do.

I think S&Ds are sufficient. *If* you are a person who strongly prefers your hair be in a certain shape (V, U, blunt hem) then sure, trim. But if length is more important to you than that, skip the trim and stay up on your S&Ds.
