WTH are those little splits at the top of my head?

One reason I don't like heat: I'm starting to get those little short hairs sticking up at the top of my head when I part it to the side. :wallbash:

Wtf are they?! And how do I stop/prevent them? Am I doing something wrong?

does it look like hair broke off at the top leaving just an inch of hair?
i used to get those when i was relaxed and flat ironing. i just figured they were broken hairs from the flat iron.

See?? I knew I shouldn't have flat ironed my roots after my blowout! I'm through with the flat iron! :wallbash:

I'm natural and don't use heat and I have noticed this as well. I figured it was from my denman brush. So I went and bought the widest tooth comb I could find.

They could also be new growth of hair replacing the shedded ones.

I was also going to suggest this if it isn't breakage. Not all hairs are at the same growth cycle stages, so not all hairs will be the same length at any time.

I have those and I haven't used heat in over 2 years. I thought it was from wrapping my hair, or stress lol.

This happens to me if I don't redistribute the hair every month or so. I can't leave my hair parted in the same place. In the crown area I just comb more or less hair back depending. Also, it helps to use thicker sections around those areas to protect and strengthen the hair against the flat iron.

My crown has grown, but I didn't know hair could do this. I'm baffled. My hair seems really healthy, but I just noticed these today.

Are you saying you only flat ironed once and you have this problem or do you use heat regularly?

For Jan and most of Feb, I was airdrying. The last two weeks, I've been rollersetting. But this week, I not only blowdried, I flat ironed my roots, too.

Could that be it?

I would get these when I was flat ironing a lot too. I would have to use products to smooth them down.

I have these, but the overall health of my hair seems fine. I just chalk it up to parting my hair on one side, or brushing my edges.

I'm using a Denman. I was told to use this. I dunno now.

I didn't know it could be new growth and that makes sense too. I'm just going to lay off for a while and see what happens. I found a really good conditioner this week-end and I think with it I could finger detangle. Going to give that a try. If not I'll just use my comb.

OT, I really like your hair in your avi!

I agree with the ladies that said it's probably new growth.

I think you most likely already had those shorter hairs but you can notice them more easily when the hair is straightened and also when you have any static in your hair they will stick up more.

Examine the ends of these little annoying hairs. If the ends are blunt it's most likely breakage. If the ends are tapered (compare them to a full length hair) then odds are you're just noticing strands of hair that are just growing in. I was all torn up about those myself a while back. I didn't find much info here but I searched and found a couple of threads on longhaircommunity about it. It makes perfect sense to me that if the hairs are actually tapered at the end (and not whitish or damaged looking) then the hairs are just new hair that maybe static is causing to stand up or you're noticing it because your hair is so straight. I definitely don't notice them when my hair is curly even though they're still there..... I have a few of these hairs and the majority of them are tapered beautifully :) so I know theyre not broken off. Those few that are blunt sort of look whitish and "cut"....

Also, to examine the ends make sure you're in VERY GOOD light, you may not be able to see the taper of the end under normal light and you may think its breakage.. Bathroom light is good...

ETA: wanted to add that as someone stated above, the reason for this is the growth cycle and those would be hairs that have shed and are growing in at a different cycle from the ones that are already long...

John Frieda's "Secret Weapon" is perfect for this issue... I've dealt with/am still dealing with some of these too... But the product is the BEST!!!

I used to have that problem when I got roller sets/blow outs at the dominican salon.
I had a different stylist ask me did I frequent them and when I said yes, she said that almost all of the people that used the technique had the same breakage in the area.
She said it sometimes comes from the metal clip not being placed correctly or from the brush and blow out process.

It can also come from your comb/brush since we normally brush from the top of our hair first.

Also, as someone else stated, it could be new growth.
