I just called a bss to ask how much a pack of expressions there was. They said they do not give out price information on their products. WTF? Well you just lost my business dum dum. What kind of policy is that? You really think that's going to help you out.

Has anyone heard of this before?

Wow, maybe they think the competition calling to spy or they just want you to come in because chances are that if your there, you will buy and not search for it at another store

Just called another one. They said the same thing. She told me all bss's do this. I am seriously in shock.

The same exact thing happened to me! I'm in Boston, MA. I just ended up giving my money to another Beauty Supply Store who released their price over the phone. I paid $4.99 per pack.

Well direct from online xpressions comes from a few different African countries so maybe online you'd be buying directly from somewhere in Africa and support their economy instead.
Also yes this is a common practice idk why if they think you'd be more likely to buy instead of driving around to other stores price checking

Is expressions actually manufactured in African countries?

This sounds most likely.

I'm friendly with one BSS owner I went to school with and he said other stores send people out to get the prices to compare.

I once went to a BSS store with a bag full of stuff from another BSS store. Don't you know the manager asked me what I had and also opened up my bag to touch my items and look at the prices:perplexed

Wow........

I think it depends on which BSS and what you're inquiring about. Some of the BSS will give prices over the phone, others won't.

This isn't exclusive to beauty supply stores. Lots of places refuse to give prices over the phone.

It's not unusual for business not to give pricing over the phone. A cell phone repair shop I called refused to give prices over the phone to fix a blacked out screen, despite Yelp reviews noting multiple customers who got pricing over the phone. I didn't use them.

I called asking if they have a certain product and when he said yes, I got all excited, asked if they could hold it for me cuz I was on my way, and asked how much money I needed to bring with me... Maybe cuz it sounded like I definitely was a customer and not a spy??? But they told me the price. They always do. Even at Sally beauty, most of them will tell me when I call... Like I'm looking for this product do you have it? Please don't sell it I'm on my way, how much is it??? They don't care, they tell me.
