I am thinking of getting braids to get me through the winter. The past 2 winters have been hell for my hair and I don't want history repeating itself(I had not started taking care of my hair back then mind you).
Right now,temperatures are around -5 Celsius(23 Farenheit)
However when winter really kicks in avg temp are from -12 Celsius(10.4 Farenheit) to -17 Celsius(1.4 Farenheit).
Of course these are just day temperatures.Night temperatures are a lot more extreme. But I am mostly out in the day anyway so it shouldnt matter.
Do you guys think these temperatures would be too much to handle?Should I get braids?
Or can the right products get me through winter without needing braids?

I would suggest a humidifier or vaporizer, stepping up the hot oil and other heat-using moisture treatments, and definitely, definitely putting a silk scarf over your hair before you pull on those hats.--and doing that whenever heading outside. I would do this even if wearing braids.

I'm in agreement with UmSumayyah. I'd be doing deep moisturizing treatments on a regular basis. I wouldn't even have my hair exposed to the inclement weather, tucked neatly away under a silky scarf covered with a hat.

Thanks for the advice ladies.I will start deep conditioning with heat more than once a week from January.I am going home to Trinidad for Christmas so my hair will be fine in that warm weather.
It is crazy the way the temp drops from December to January .I esp feel it when coming back from a warm place.
I will start using hot oil treatments more and get my wool hat lined with silk.

That's the thing...my hairline usually recedes a bit when I get braids.I don't know how to prevent that.
I think I will take extra care of my hair for January and if my hair starts getting damaged anyway, I will get braids by February.

I would deep condition as ofen as needed to keep my hair in good shape during the winter. I've never had braids but I will never ever get them because of what I've seen them do to some people's hair and scalp!

When I get braids I usually use some sort of temple balm, ORS, etc. Braids are good for whenever, you just have to remember that you have to take care them as well as you do your real hair.

the key is not to tight..not to much product on your scalp so theirs not too much build up, and braids no smaller that medium width, especially around the edges.....u can do it, take special care, as u would with your own hair.....

I have never suffered a receding hair line. Maybe it's because i braid my own hair and am gentle when it comes to braiding my hairline.
