I know that mineral oil and petroleum are bad for the hair but what other ingrediants should people be wary of? What makes these things so bad for the hair. I have been wondering about this a lot lately. I want to be more knowledgeable of what I am using on my hair.
Well..this is a bit of a loaded question, because I don't think that there are any "bad" ingredients for hair.
Everyone has different hair, and the only way to really be knowledgeable is to get to know your own hair's likes and dislikes. This isn't to say that you should become a product junkie and try every single hair product you see, but be careful that you don't strike an ingredient from your regimen on another person's say-so alone, because it could turn out to be the best thing for your hair.
With that said, I personally don't use any mineral oil, petroleum, or lanolin, because they make my hair greasy and heavy and they clog the pores on my scalp. But I know of people who use vaseline and grease in their regimens with excellent results.
As an afterthought, you'd probably be better off asking people what ingredients they /do/ like for their hair.
Good luck!
