Side effects of selenium poisoning.

I think the reason some supplements don't work for some is because they aren't lacking them in first place. If you take it, you aren't doing anything but peeing it out if your body doesn't absorb it.

I agree but when Chris Hanson went undercover, his vitamins had none of the vitamins listed and included poison and it was approved.

You know I oughta spank you right??

You posting this and then got a headache from hoohah cream on your head!

I think this was more a case of tainted product. Just like the thing with the tomatoes that happened, and a few other kinds of produce. They recalled them all and we had NO tomatoes anywhere!!

I stick to vitamin pills and only buy from vitamin shoppe or gnc as I trust them more. No off the wall brands.

I kept having visions of me in the emergency room trying to explain to the Dr. why I had monistat on my head :spinning::drunk: while having a stroke...lawd ham mer c

Where's my switch??? *rifles around crap on floor*

If you're that hellbent...try some nettles and horsetail! Or amla oil.

LOL...the whole Monistat thing scares me because, I'm scared that eventually your body will absorb so much of it, that when you may need it for an actual infection, it will not work. You'll have one of those resistant yeast infections! OUCH....:perplexed

Yup, watched parts of this last night...

Very scurry indeed...

dude using nylons to trap those black spots...lawd...:nono:

and how easy it was for dateline to mix up their own batch/ brand of supplements...:nono:

They never said what those black spots were either :nono:

Fifteen years in the pharmaceutical industry has taught me to be wary of anything I put in my mouth, whether prescription or otherwise. The US FDA does not regulate supplements as they do drugs. This means that supplement companies are not required to go through the process of registration and clinical trials that, say, Bayer has to to keep it's aspirin on the market. The supplements companies do not have to prove through 6 years and 5 billion dollars of rigorous lab testing and clinical trials that their products are safe and effective.

Basically, anyone can get a business license, throw some dried grass and rat poo in a gel capsule and say it will cure your high blood pressure. Then, get a lab to test it, issue a certificate and say, "yep! they're right!" Even if it's wrong, the lab issuing the certificate can not stop the supplement company from releasing a potentially deadly product to the masses. Sure, they can report the company to the FDA, but by the time the government gets around to inspection, damage done. People are hospitalized or dead.

The government is slow and has just gotten around to getting a group to handle the mass of supplements on the market. Mostly, they are putting out fires from situations like the one in the video. I get FDA emails daily about this or that supplement company that has laced its 'natural' supplement with prescription meds to actually be effective (particularly those to maintain erections--they are actually lacing those with high doses of viagra!) or contaminated with pathogens.

The stores like GNC or Vitamine Shop or whatever do not test these products. They get the paperwork from the supplement companies and trust that they are truthful. Otherwise, these outlets would be spending hundreds of millions on their own labs to test everything that comes through to their shelves. Not gonna happen.

So, as in all things, buyer beware.

BTW, ANYONE can get FDA emails daily listing product recalls, warnings, and label changes. It's available for anyone on the planet to receive as part of public safety and health. This includes not only drugs, but foods, toys, and other household products. Much of it doesn't make it to the general news. I can't tell you how many recalls I get from products sold at Whole Foods, Trader Joes, other grocery stores across the country and toy manufacterers (I have a child). My inbox is littered with them.

PM me if you'd like to know how to get these emails. They're a free public service.

I never thought of that :lachen: Girl aint nothing funny about a resistant yeast infections :perplexed

Yeah, I don't think we have to just worry about mistakes in supplements. FDA regulation is a joke. The tiny amount of food that they actually inspect is ridiculous. We're taking a chance with anything that we're ingesting. Nothing's exempt. Baby food, reputable brand medicines, fruits and veggies. Shoot, don't even get me crying about air quality.

That was a terrible mistake made and heads would be rolling if that happened to me. Believe it. But thankfully, since it wasn't, I'm gonna keep blessing my meals, praying over my health and keep it moving.

Very interesting report. Thanks for sharing. :yep:

This is why it is so important to have a balanced diet in the first place. If your hair growth is slow or you're shedding a lot see a doctor instead of trying to make up for it through supplements. Vitamin overdose does occur and remember that your health and wellbeing is much more important than supplements for your hair.

I have taken supplements before, but the only ones I'm taking right now is iron and MSM. I will continuously take iron until further notice (I'm anaemic so I have to).

Selenium overdose is the reason I don't indulge in my love for Brazil nuts as much as I would like.

For those who sent PMs wanting the FDA info I will get it to you all tonight. Can't do it at work...and its hard on this phone.

NJoy you are precisely right! I agree with your entire post

Also: everyone please be aware that vitamin overdose even just on regular womens' one a day brands is very easy. The first sign is excessive shedding/hair loss. If that happens stop taking it and see your doc.

My daughter OD'd on Flinstones one a days last year and she was just 4! I was giving her the 1 daily as directed. After a month her hair started falling out in the brush! Luckily I knew what it was. Haven't given her any since. No long term harm done. Now we have fresh fruit and veggie smoothies for breakfast with different combinations everyday.

I think that's the best bet long term

It IS crazy! We are mostly just touching on her hair loss. But they also mentioned IT DAMAGED HER HEART. So now she has heart disease for life. At least hair grows back...

From what I've seen in my medical training so far, supplements are a delicate business.
Some excess vitamins get urinated out, but some stored in your fat, and if you start doing things like losing weight, effectively a toxic dose may be administered to your system messing with things that really shouldn't be tinkered with, like your vital organs.
Also, supplemental vitamin and minerals are absorbed with different, often lower rates to their dietary equivalents, so they may not even be effective in the long run!
People please be careful!

The idea is novel but I have to take vitamins as I can't just up and eat fruit plus a list of other stuff like everyone else as I'm allergic to 95% of them.

As with anything people need to research before starting something new, be it for hair or anything else.

For example...tumeric is a GREAT supplement to take...but can give a false reading with your liver if they do blood. Of course they won't tell you this when you go to purchase tumeric or hell, they might not even know.

Read. I stress this to everyone. READ and research before trying anything new.

This is ridiculous. My kids are off the Flintstones from this point on! I'm not consistent with my vitamins so I guess that's a good thing. The FDA is a business and a grimy one at that.
