I'm transitioning, and I'm looking for new things to do. I was considering getting a wig, but I have never had one. I wanted to get some input from the regular wig wearers. How do you care for your hair when you're wigging it?

I just started wearing a wig a couple of months ago and my hair has been growing like CRAZY!!! :yay:

What I do is put my hair in small individual twists or the twists that go straight back (like conrows). I generally leave them in for 1-2 weeks then take them down and give my hair a hotoil treatment (on dry hair w/ EVOO) then a GOOD deep condition, then I throw them right back up! It's really quite simple.

While my hair is twisted, I make sure I put a leave-in conditioner in my hair EVERYDAY, I put cator oil or a moisturizer on my ends everyday, and I use MTG every 2-3 days or so (I mix it w/ a few drops of Rosemary and Peppermint EO and it feels HEAVENLY :love3:).

Be sure to cover your hair EVERY time you put your wig on, and make sure you get a stocking cap that isn't rough on your ends. Also, be sure to let your hair breathe. I only put my wig on when I leave the house, as soon as I return I take my wig off and stocking cap then put on my satin hair bonnet to give my hair air and preserve my twists. This method serves as a GREAT low maintenance protective style for me. I was never a wig girl, but this is working for me. I think I will keep the wi a little longer to gain some more inches, then I will have more options for protective styles!

That's all for now. I hope this helps.

I've worn wigs before to give my hair a rest. When I was relaxed, I wore a wig for about 6 months just to hide my hair. B/c I had heard so many horror stories about hair loss around the edges of frequent wig wearers, I would wrap my hairline in a strip of silk & while holding the silk in place with one hand, I would work a stocking cap (not nylon but a satiny fabric) over the silk. I would take my wig off as soon as I walked through the door & I was oiling/moisturizing my hair daily & washing weekly. My hair was in very good shape due to this method.
