Usually wigs look a HAM IMHO and in many other's opinions too. :ohwell:

On television, it is one thing, but in real life, it's usually too obvious that it is fake. It tends to look unnatural. So, unless someone has some sort of condition, I think it makes them look ridiculous. I know that many other people feel this way too.

In my life, I have seen one decent looking wig on a girl when I was in undergrad. At least, I think it was a wig. It may have been some sort of weave, but honestly it looked like a wig that was glued to a bald head. :ohwell: She was pretty and the wig wasn't too full or "wiggish. So, she was able to pull it off from day to day IMO. But, I used to wonder what would happen when guys discovered that she was wearing a wig. My guess is that they were like, "YUCK!", but would try to hide their reactions in case she was bald or had some sort of medical condition.

Yesterday, I saw a thread on here about a wig challenge to grow long hair. I noticed that there were A LOT of LHCFers signed up. One of the reasons listed for the wig challenge was to protect your natural hair, while still being "THAT GIRL". Now, being that girl can go BOTH WAYS. ;) You can be "that girl" that everyone notices b/c she is chic. Or, u can be "that girl" who looks a HAM and thinks she looks cute.

So, out of general concern, are u sure that YOUR wig looks nice and not a HAM? Do you get :look: crazy looks?

I was in the mall yesterday and I saw a girl with a wavy lace front on. It looked nice from the back, but those "baby hairs" in the front were a mess. It almost looked like a helmet or something. I have also seen lots of ladies with obvious wigs that looked really pretty.

I tried to wear a wig... but I just couldn't do it! It was so hot and itchy, I was terrified it would come off, and I was so self-conscious. I kept wondering if people thought I had a wig on or not... I had to stop wearing it.

If someone just doesn't care about other people's opinions, then go 'head with your bad self! Rock that wig! Cuz what's really important to you may be the growth of your real hair underneath, and knowing that you can stun them all with your gorgeous locks when they grow really long.

I wear a half wig and I get compliments on it all day everyday. I've worn a full wig and same thing. You have to STYLE it to suit you. Plus, the wig doesn't wear me, I wear the wig. With or without a wig i've never had a trouble commanding positive attention so. :ohwell:

Why are you so concerned?

I agree with the bold. I work whatever I wear. I also never try to pass a wig or weave as my own hair. That's like passing a sweater off as my skin. :lachen: I see a lot of women who wear wigs and I know that they are wigs and they look really nice.

I used to wear wigs a few years back, and I thought I was TOO fly rockin them, too! I styled them and made them look all cute, but dh hated them and I never understood why. Lately, I've seen a lot of women on tv and in movies wearing wigs, and no matter how the wigs are styled, it looks soooo obvious. So a few days ago I asked dh if my wigs looked that obvious and he damn near screamed ''YES!'' I looked back at old pictures of me wearing wigs, and :nono:

I don't understand how I didn't see it :ohwell:

i just wore my first half wig this past week. Its a bone straight one. But i have 10 weeks post ng edges:yep:.

i blended as best i could. but every black girl i walked by i just felt like they were burning a hole in my head saying 'i know that ain't urs b-ish'.:lachen:. I can't be mad cuz i do it too.

mine doesn't look like a ham. it sits rather nicely on my head. my only concern is the texture of the hair. Its sooo shiny and so bouncy. very unnatural looking. i wish it was human hair so i could atleast curl or add some texture to it.

i'm only self-consious about it on the street. not at work.

Its nothing but white people at my job and they don't know a wig from wheat bread.

Yup, my wigs look great and I do receive compliments. I will pull it off in a hot minute for people close to me when they are curious how I hide my hair beneath the wig after I tell them it is a wig. Many believe the colors close to my natural are my own hair. Really, I do not care what people think about my wig wearing...it's mine..I bought it.

ROFLMAO :lachen: :lachen: I literally laughed out loud @ the bolded!

Well, many of us on this board have been trying to be "that girl" and/or "fabulous". Some of us don't really know how to go about looking nice everyday, etc. so we look to the board for tips and ideas. Like I've already stated, I've seen a decent looking wig on someone before. :yep: She looked nice IMO. But, I have also seen A LOT of people that did not pull it off so well.

I figured this might be a sensitive subject for some. :yep: However, it could be beneficial for some other people.

I own one half wig. I wore it when I was at my mothers house for T-Giving. I told her that I brought one with me. My brother never even noticed. I just did it so that I wouldn't have to be bothered with my hair while there. Other than that I always avoid them. I think it's because my mother wore them *every day* when I grew up and still wears them now. She doesn't take care of her hair under the wig. :nono: So I grew up with the impression that wigs were being worn to hide unhealthy hair or to help with an issue.

And because I saw them every day, I know that I did the 'wig' / 'not a wig' mental check on a frequent basis. Now, I don't think about it or at least have a generally more positive impression. And I don't give anyone any looks.... well, not anymore!

I think she would be lot less likely to ask you such a question if the tone of your initial post didn't seem somewhat negative i.e. the HAM/YUCK statement. The thing about LHCF is that lots of members do lots of things that not everyone would do. What works for one woman will not necessarily work for another. It's best to try to keep an open mind and while this is clearly a public forum and we are all allowed to assert our opinions I think there's a way to go about doing it respectfully without offending parties on either side - that's just my 2 cents.

Now to answer your question: i think as stated above it all depends on how you style your wig. Many women have very harried schedules during the week etc and find it conducive to wear a wig and also keep our hair protected underneath (personally this is why I do it). I have not received one strange look from anyone as a matter of fact most people have complimented me on how "great my hair as been looking lately" and I tell them thanks but it's not my hair. I think again everything is about a personal choice - I don't think I've ever seen a wig that looks like "HAM" but I have seen a few obvious ones that have none the less looked phenomenal. I also don't really see a difference between someone who chooses to wear a wig versus someone that choses to wear braids or weave or a phony pony these are just variations of protective styling.

I think that most of the time, wigs are pretty obvious. A few semesters ago though, my friend wore a wig to class and i honestly thought it was a nice weave until she told me otherwise (and swore me to secrecy...oops:lachen:). I like wigs though, some of them can be really pretty and unique, while others that i've seen have been nearly falling off the womans head, or terribly leaning to the side which can cause you to do a double look. I am too scary to try and pull a wig off though, i tried wearing one a few years back and i couldn't style it right and then i was afraid it was going to fall off my head! Talk about the longest day of my life...:spinning: But overall, i like them and to each her own, just make sure it stays on str8 .

Luscious*Locked*Doc, I didn't mind her question. I think it is a legitimate one. :yep: And I understand what you mean about being respectful. ;) But, for the record, I wasn't saying that I was thinking "Yuck" about wigs. :nono: That's just how I would imagine most MEN reacting to them. :yep: (Yeah, I went out on a limb and used the word most. :ohwell: ) I really honestly think that they would. :yep: That's not necessarily an excuse to not wear one though IMHO!

It's funny b/c one time, my friend and I were shopping in the mall. There was a kiosk that sold hair pieces. They asked if we wanted to try one on and my friend was like yeah and then said to me "You let her put it on your hair b/c ur hair is straight." So, I agreed b/c what would the big deal in modelling the hair piece. Well, just when the girlwas helping me remove it from my head, these two guys walked by and if you could see the looks on their faces as the hair was being pulled off my head... Well, you would say that "Yuck!" was putting it nicely! :lachen: :lachen: :lachen:

I have worn lace wigs before and never had a problem with them looking fake or a HAM. I have also worn regular wigs about 3-4 times and they looked more like weaves than anything. I also agree it is all about the style. If I did wear a wig I usually got it the same length as my hair or shorter.

U must not have seen my half wig album lol No really, I could never wear a full wig but a lot of people thought my half wigs were my hair.

Agreed.:yep:

I've never gotten anything but compliments wearing wigs -- but I only tell those that I'm close to that it's a wig :yep:...anybody else, it's really none of their business. Another key to wig wearing for me, I don't wear one that is longer than the length of my own hair. It makes for transitioning between the wig and wearing my own hair out, less obvious.

I'm still laughing to myself about the construction worker the other morning clocking me while I was putting my umbrella up saying "I was wondering when you were going to do that...with that pretty hair!"
:look:

It's all how you rock the wig. I actually style mine to suit me; I've never rocked a wig directly from the bag to my head without doing anything to it.

I have worn wigs several times. all wigs don't look like wigs although some do. People were surprised to find out that my hair was a wig. They would ask me where I got my hair done and I'd say "I bought it!" :lachen:

Wigs are fake!! I wear half wigs and I have now started to wear full wigs. When I wear them, it is never to fool anyone into believing it is my own hair. I have received many compliments when wearing my wigs as well. I think that no matter if you wear a wig or not it is about the style and how it suits you. IMO, I am beautiful and a wig does not make me who I am!! I would be cute with a wig or if I was bald. I am not the type to care about what people think. I am wearing them to achieve a goal. When I see women looking at me weird, usually it is the one's with chopped off, damaged hair and they are hating. I know this because the first time I wore my hair down, they looked at me and said wow you have hair???!!! I guess they thought I had hair like them and that was the reason for my wearing wigs. I am empowered in knowing I have a head full of protected hair underneath. As for men....I really don't think that my husband married me because of hair but because of the person that I am inside and out. I guess you just have to have that I don't care attitude......

I wear wigs, and I don't get strange looks. I don't think that's because people assume it's my real hair, because even I recognize they don't look that real; I just think it's because they look good!

I don't wear straight wigs, though. All of my wigs are kinky; not curly, kinky. And they all have bangs, too. I also live in an area heavily populated with white folks, and all they see is the texture, so they always assume it's mine.

In CA though, I've had some black women approach me, and if they have an OUNCE of doubt as to whether or not it's my hair, they slyly ask, "where I got my hair done". (Translation: Who did your weave?) Then I tell them it's a wig, and I can see their eyes all up in my head looking for some type of wig evidence or something. :lachen:

Your right. I haven't seen your half wig album. I don't think that half wigs look bad. They have the same effect as weaves IMO.

I use to wear a wig when I lived in Germany and traveled to Italy. It was hard to swim in the ocean or pool and be ready for dinner or shopping (this was before I knew about LHCF) so I rocked this short wig when I took trips. I miss that wig. Haven't found one yet that matched me so well. It was so cute and I had to throw it away b/c it got to old.

My opinion is if you find a wig that matches you and and your personality that is when you will look great in one.

I am usually a lurker, but I had to respond to this. I have worn wigs for going on 3 years. At first it was convenience, then it went as a protective style. I have always gotten compliments on my hair and even some the kinkier one made me think it was mine because it was shaped to fit my face. I've seen people that go around with their wigs half off their head or even their tracks showing. That's not me. I do me regardless of what people think. I care for other opinions, because they don't make or break me.

As far as men go, wigs haven't stopped me in that either. My ex knew I wore wigs and was really cool with it. It was like he got a new gf when I changed wigs or something. He also knew what my real hair looked like. As far as others I've dated, they haven't had a problem with it either. I've never gotten the yuck looks, or anything. Maybe it's because I really don't give a f#@k. Excuse my language. I'm the girl that will dye her hair green and still look fly.

There are many people who buy wigs and just put them on and that can cause problems. IMO, you can have a realistic looking wig, but many factors come into play. The hair quality, color, density, and cut. I believe those are very important. I wore a lacefront for quite some time.

Just recently I wore a wig for fat tuesday... Mardi Gras and I thought I was cute. Then later I looked at a picture I had taken at the event and I was like oh no:blush:. I think it really depends on how you style the wig. I have never gotten the styling part down unless I wear a scarf or something to cover the fake scalp. LOL. Like one person said sometimes the wigs are just too shiny. Falls or Half wigs are the best in MHO but then again some wigs are fly. The issue I had was wearing wigs and not protecting my hair underneath. That is why I am here to correct that problem. A good guy friend of my mine was honest in stating its okay to wear wigs but make sure your own hair is right underneath. But he also is just a guy who likes a woman with natural hair period. But if anyone knows how to style a wig properly... Im into suggestions.

Nope... I get a lot of compliments on mine. I don't think people realize they're wigs though. They probably think it's weave. I've seen other ladies with wigs on that look nice. Just like I've seen people with wigs that look a HAM. It's no different than any other hairstyle, IMO. But I agree with the ladies who said you have to style it to suit you.

I don't think wigs are that big of a deal anymore because you see a lot of people with them on. Years ago you only saw them rarely with the exception of older women. And I've never had any men complain about my wigs. ;) As long as they don't see you take it off and put it on I don't think it bothers them. Most of them are none the wiser.

I have 2 half wigs that I wear sometimes when I'm rushed to do my hair and people always thinks it my real hair. I soak them in water and vinegar to get the shine off then I brush them a little so it has a little "frizz" in some spots to look more natural. I"m natural and the textured wigs look like a braid out kind of. I put them on w/cute scarves (i wear scarves regularly). To be honest more people ask me if my real hair is a wig or weave than the wigs I wear because my hair is thick and fairly dark. Like the bun in my avatar, several of my students asked me if that was my hair but noone asked me when I wore the half wig, go figure. :yep:
