Why is trimming bad?

A lot of people seem to be against the practice of getting regular trims every 6-8 weeks. If you're trying to grow your hair I can see why you'd not want trims . . . but, I mean, what if you really do have raggedy, jacked up edges? In that case, certainly a trim is necessary, right?

I think people just mainly want to debunk the myth that you have to trim in order to grow your hair...that just doesn't make sense:rolleyes:

Also, if you only grow .5 inches average every 4 weeks..and then go and cut 1/4- 1/2 inches evey six week...it will take a good minute to grow your hair

Another good point is that if you are doing your DCs and rocking the protective styles and not abusing heat, you won't NEED a trim as often. I used to be addicted to my curling iron. During those days I needed a regular trim or my hair would split all the way up to my scalp!

It's not bad, just not as necessary as some believe. Also some people (mostly stylists) don't know the difference between trim and cut/hack. For a lot of women, frequent trimming is counterproductive.

Yeah Im not against trimming per se

I like most other women on this board do not believe that your ends need to be cut every 6 weeks

I mean to me it never made any sense..

I agree with everything the ladies said above. Trimming is not a "bad" practice. It just isn't always necesssary and if someone wants to see length, trimming every few weeks is counterproductive. We don't always have split ends or jacked up ends. A good trim at the beginning of one's hair journey could last a very long time if one has a good, hair-healthy regimen.

I only started trimming/dusting last fall, after my hair was long enough where I didn't mind experimenting in this way (I was testing the lunar phase method). My hair grew and retained length just fine all that time before, without trims and with no split ends. :)

Yes, trimming is bad for people with obviously healthy hair and healthy ends. There is no point. :ohwell: My hair is growing just fine without the extra cutting (no split ends either). If my ends were raggedy, I would "cut" them off because I prefer healthy-looking hair. :yep:

I also agree. I was always a rare hair trimmer, but I stopped completely a year and some months ago. Trimming isn't a bad practice. I just believe it is an unnecessary one. This may be because my first hair cut wasn't until I was a teen, and my hair's length nor health was never affected by lack of trimming. So, it never became a part of my routine.

A lot of people have had their new growth come in every 6 to 8 weeks, and then have a stylist come and clip their ends (meaning leaving them with no growth after their touch up). This is why a lot of ladies hair always look the same length. The stylist is too busy cutting it off (aka trim) every 6 to 8 weeks. That's why some consider it bad!

I agree with everything that these ladies have said, but I might add that many times the stylist is trying to maintain a hair style. (They are cutting more than just splits.)

My ends would be fine, but stylists have always wanted to" even me out" or "shape me up." If you're aiming for long hair, you probably don't want to be shaped if that means cutting. That's one reason I like my hair being cut in layers. It grows in layers anyway, so there's less need for shaping.
