and Ovation Therpay cause shedding?

I know that it can in some people, because I've read the threads, but...

Does anyone know what it is about the product that actually causes the shedding? Is it the formulation of the chemicals in the product? Is it the extra protein? :scratchch

I don't think anything in these products (MegaTek/Ovation) causes shedding. People's misuse of the product does. (IMHO)

I purchased OCT & followed the directions & had no problems. However, the product is a rip-off. Aphogee Keratin 2 minute has the same benefits as a light protein treatment, which is what OCT is supposed to be.

I don't think MT/OCT causes shedding actually. I think because people are paying more attention while using it (because they're looking to see if they have any growth), they notice their regular shedding more than they normally would.

From my experience Mega-Tek caused my hair to shed a lot. I wasn't taking the garlic supplements like I should have and it really thinned out my hair. I stopped using it 3 months ago and my hair is regaining it's thickness. I don't know why it causes shedding (speeds up growth cycle ?) but my hair does not shed like that on its own.

Interesting. I never thought of that.

How did you use the megatek?

I would use it 3x a week as a topical aid between my braids and I would wash my hair every two weeks. It could have been too much for my hair. But now that it is thickening up I don't want to try it again.:ohwell: and I still have half a bottle left.

Yikes! You're probably right. Using it as a leave-in really might have been too much, particularly if you were deep conditioning with a moisturizing conditioner frequently.

I also agree with Solitude and MSA - especially the similiarity of the ingredients to the Aphogee 2 minute - I think that MT/OCT ingredient dosage (lack of a better word) is about 10 times more potent

I don't do the apply to the scalp thingee...I would use it as a protein condish...I think some folks tend to forget that this stuff is made for horses - it can heal horses hooves - ( and that is some hard crusty ish) - I use it in moderation (in rotation with other protein condishes) and follow up with a moisturizing dc and I am good.

HTH

I asked this question a while ago in a thread where everyone was claiming that it was protein overload. I understand that too much protein causes breakage ... but for those that think it's protein overload, can you explain how externally applied protein can cause shedding?.

First let me start by saying I agree totally with the other posters theories of speed of hair growth, misuse of product, and also protein actually stopping shedding. I also know the difference between a shed hair and a broke hair. I also understand that protein overloaded hair looks and feels hard & brittle, craving moisture. However (not claiming to be an authority on the subject), I feel that some people are more sensitive to protein that others, especially hard protein. And while I don't think it's an allergic reaction, I believe MT/OCT may cause extra stress on the follicle. So instead of the the hair being shed naturally and new hair filling in, the hair becomes thinner with continued use in some people. Jmo.

Hmmm. Now, that's a thought, too.

I'm with Solitude and Msa on this one.

I also think one reason why people say they got more shedding was because of the fact that they had product still on their scalps. When you are applying a product to your scalp directly more frequently, you need to make sure that you are cleansing your scalp effectively and more frequently. I think too many people applied it very frequently but were not accounting for that during their washing cycle.

Also, since mucopolysacharrides are in the product and help stimulate the scalp it is also possible that some people just needed time to get used to it which is to be expected anytime you are using something that helps increase growth.

Mega-Tek does not make my hair shed. I can get protein overload and get dryness and breakage due to using another conditioner that had protein in it. I would say that by the 2nd bottle I had a little more shedding than usual. But then I started eating garlic. I now eat garlic every week whether it's by the clove or garlic powder.

I leave MT on my scalp and it absorbs very well. I don't over saturate my scalp. And I don't have the shedding problems. However, I do wash my hair 2-3x a week so that may help.

Good points raised. I have always been perplexed by the paradoxes surrounding megatek. On one hand people say it aids growth and thickness by increasing shedding - as I understood it - by pushing out hair to make way for new growth. Yet on the other hand people are doing everything they can to combat the same shedding which is supposed to be a "beneficial effect" of megatek. I don't get it.
