I have been to several salons and have had my hair washed. Some experiences have been better than others.

The best part most of the time at least has been when they massage your scalp as they are shampooing it. However I have found some of them have been very heavy handed with their treatment and use their nails or rough strokes in shampooing. Sometimes it feels soothing, other times it plain ol hurts.

Am I the only one experiencing this? I hate when their claws come out. God bless you all.

Azul11,

They aren't supposed to use their nails. They are supposed to use the pads of their fingers (this stimulates the scalp). If the claws come out, I suggest you tell them that they are hurting you. Also using their nails can scrape or scratch your scalp, so that's not really a good idea.

You are not alone!!!! They really did a number on my aunt's head she has the sores to prove it too. It is only now healing. Horrific experience IMO.

A lot of times when women are coming fresh out of a braided hairstyle or something similar, they go in and actually ASK for the scratching when it comes times to lay back into that sink.

It can, unfortunately, lead those hairstylists into thinking everyone wants this. Girl, just like with anything else I'd just tell her to be easy on your head because it's not for you, LOL.

Well my stylist scratches while she rinses out the relaxer!!!! that's why a sistah decided to start doing her own hair. i figure she doesn't know that this hurts because she's natural and probably hasn't had a relaxer in a minute.

Stylists and shampoo assistants KNOW they are not supposed to do this. :( Even before I started cosmetology school I knew that fingernails should never be used when shampooing, and I never do it. If a client asks me to scratch her scalp or vigorously rub it during the shampoo, I prefer to use my soft plastic shampoo brush, and I use that gently. Ladies, please speak up if you ever find yourself in this position and make them stop.

That part of the whole process has begun to bother me. Of late my scalp has become ultra sensitive....this is probably after my disastrous touchup where I was left with burns and bald spots...since then any vigorous action on my scalp is too much. It is like someone stabbing me or slicing my scalp...very painful. I have found this seems to be common practice in many salons I frequent.

I once had a woman scrub my head so damn hard I was so afraid she would rub out my edges...I am like hot damn my hair wasnt that dirty....geeezzz...this is why I dont go to salons often...only for touchups...hopefully one day that will end too...God bless you all.

I can't tolerate the nails. I remember when I was overseas, this woman literally scraped my scalp with her nails. I screamed and she looked at me like I was crazy but she used her pads of her fingers eventually. That was the most painful experience in my life.

Yeah I just experienced this on this past thurs when I went to get my fresh relaxer. Her nails look like claws. Despite the fact she was scratching my scalp which is a big no no she also was really rough when combing my hair out. Geez why do stylist and assistants do this. I am extra gentle when combing my hair and you comb it out like your a mad woman.
