I don't think that they are essential and a lot of people don't need or use them. Some however, myself included, have many different benefits from hot oii treatments. For me, it's my ends. My ends don't get as brittle when doing hot oil treatments once a week and when I wet my hair a little before applying my EVOO and honey mixture, it traps the moisture and my hair stays more moisturized. I remember one lady saying that it stopped her shedding. It all depends on the person's hair. I'm sure others have found other uses....
I have no idea what's the 'main purpose' of a hot oil treatment. For my hair, it helps it with retaining moisture, keeping it soft and helping out with the shine a bit too.
the most important reason I do hot oil treatment is because
my prescription dandruff shampoo (nizoral) can dry my hair
out and make it hard if I do a hot oil treatment my hair
is soft and still has moisture.
