I only go once every 9 months and my daughter goes once every 9-12 months and we go only for trims. Bad experiences will make visits to the salon feel like a waste of your time. Many of you who are offended maybe haven't experienced the appt that felt like a workday. That is a waste of time. I have experienced this with almost every stylist I have been to, with the exception of a few. I too didn't think I had a choice as this was my experience ever since I was about 10. I didn't know there was a such thing as a stylist not taking 7-8 hours to do your hair and purposely overbooking until I was well into my 30s. My stylist now is respectful enough of my time and I usually book the last appt to make sure I am not competing with other patrons.

Stylist can not diagnose ANY type of medical condition
However, they are educated on common skin and scalp disorders. They are made aware of them so in your client profile they can note it. They can suggest you see a dermatologist. Stylist style hair.

I'm ok with "wasting" my money. I've been to bad salons and good salons here in the DMV. The best salon I have been to to date was actually in Dominica Republic. Minimal heat, proper detangling and still got dat bounce and flow.....not this mess I experienced at some Dominican spots here in MD. Hair looked pretty, but it was after a TON of heat (extensive blow dry, flat iron, even after the roller set...etc). The rest I can take or leave with the exception of your premium salons. Expensive, but I am willing to pay the price. I don't go often, but I am thinking of going more frequently.

I'm not super picky about the style of my hair as long as it looks neat and is healthy. I have someone that I go to for special occasions that's far from my house and charges 50.
I get my hair done every other week for 15 each visit. In between week I do it myself.

The title is based on perception.
I think people waste money at the salon because most of them here in NY are crappy and they don't care for your hair. They just style. But there are some places who do care for your hair, and by care I mean education on styling during the week.
I went to the salon for years because that's all I knew. I watched how to do hair in the salon, but had to research on how to do my own hair through google. Would I step foot in the salon again? Maybe if I really needed to. But the urge to put the care of my head in someone else's hands has no support from any of my brain cells.
I mostly find it sad that I watch Reniece's YouTube, read Shamboosie and see that there are good stylists out there, but they are so hard to find. Perhaps if more cosmo's were concerned about "retention" and not fear of telling someone on how to care for her hair properly between visits thinking she will never come back because they "teach you how to fish", more women would have faith in salons.

There is a lady at Great Clips who does my trims. Its been a while since I've gone due to my schedule and her hours, but I spent that money with no shame.
My hair thrived!
I'll have to find someone else to do my blow-out and press. My person died (age 37-cancer) 1 week or so ago. It took her 90 minutes to wash, condition, blow-out, and press my 4AB BSL natural hair where it looked like I got a perm. I dropped 90 dollars for that service. She told me "no tip" when I'd reach for some money. Best 90.00 I ever spent.
Whereas, it took me 3 hours to do the same thing, it never came out AS STRAIGHT...No, stylist it is.

I'm proud to be a salon owner and stylist. I have also been a customer so I have had good and bad experiences as well. I'm just not willing to condemn a whole profession
