Hello everyone! I am wondering are there any ladies on here that make a living doing hair out of their homes? Is it lucrative for you? How have you gotten your customers? Do you post flyers, advertise or work from referrals? Can you give me some insight as to how you have gotten started? I am interested in finding out more about this! I have also posted this in the Career section as well.
Thanks in advance

Be careful about running certain businesses at home, because you can get into trouble if you don't have a permit! If there is anyone spiteful and finds out that you are running a business like this from home, they may report you and if you are in violation of any zoning restrictions you may be fined. Just gets complicated!

You should research your competition and then put together an advertisement and make as many connections as possible! Craigslist is a good place to start for a free listing. I don't know what type of hair styles you do, but I do formal hair and have gotten a lot of clients through bridal sites, vendor referrals, and good old fashioned word of mouth! I haven't done any bridal show yet, but that is also a very good source!

Good Luck :)

This is so true. Personally, w/o a license, I would only do it for people I knew personally, and maybe people they referred. Also, I may be wrong, but I believe that in many places, you don't need a license to do things such as braiding. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. :)

I do braids, and sew in tracks at home. I am not liscensed so I stick to styles that I don't need a liscense for.(Non-chemical) I don't do perms, cuts, curls etc. I used to work at a shop doing braids and sew-ins, and I have some clients from then still. I also printed out some business cards and passed them out and passed out flyers in Barbershops, etc. I would say its very lucrative, but I have a full-time job and only do it every now and then. But just know that people don't expect to pay as much at you home as they would at a salon, so you have to set your prices accordingly.

That's true. That's why when you go to the African shops you have to come with your hair already washed and dried. You can't do any chemical services without a license. But as for braiding and weaves you should be okay. I've been thinking about doing weaves myself. Maybe some natural hair styles. A lot of my friends and family have been egging me on to do it since I do my own hair. I have no idea where to start as far as getting clients though. :ohwell: I haven't done anybodys hair except my one gfs (I sewed a weave in for her) and my moms before (but that was just washing/blow drying/flatironing).

Girl, I've been secretly wanting you to hook me up for months now. I live 45 minutes from Baltimore and don't trust salons AT ALL. Your styles always look so cute and I'm bored with my hair right now.:ohwell:

Ladies, thanks so much for the info! If I do plan to do hair on the side I will make sure that Im not gonna do any styles that require a license. I very much appreciate the feedback! Good luck to you all!

Really? Aww thanks! If I do start doing hair forreal, I'm going to have to cut my nails down though. I like my nails. They disguise my big man hands. :ohwell:

You just say the word, sweetie and you have a client!

My friend does this. She has been doing it since she was a freshman in college and is graduating this year. This is her "job". She does only braids and she's very good at it. She doesnt advertise but she gets a lot of referrals.
