I'm attending a formal this Saturday, and I'm interested in creating this look without adding hair. Anyone ever do this??

I think it's quite beautiful.:yep:

that is beautiful. My mom used to do my hair like that (with pigtails of course) and I loved that hairstyle then. Sorry I couldn't help.

This style is in this month's Essence magazine with Tyra on the cover. The stylist used pieces to achieve the style so I am not sure how to recreate it without them, but here is what it says in the article. I am still confused after reading it. :perplexed HTH.

"This double-knotted do plays on volume and proportion. The topknot is rolled and then wrapped horizontally, while the nape is coiled and wrapped vertically. To achieve, Yusef parted the hair ear to ear and used add-ons to form two ponytails. The knots were then formed and pinned into place."

Thanks CokoQt. That's where I got it from, Essence. I was confused a bit after reading as well. I guess i can just put my hair in two ponies and start twisting?? I'll try this tonight and see what happens. I have all this stuff to do on Saturday during the day with my kids, so I didn't want to have to fuss with adding hair and such when it came time to style my hair. If I can't figure it out, I'll try a variation I can work with.

I have envisioned as a second choice, a low bun pulled straight back, but instead of one bun, 4 buns clustered together. Know what I mean??

I had my hair like this for my dads 60th bday party last May and literally all the lady did was part my hair, make two ponytails, add the weave and then she twisted the hair as much as possible (starting with the top pony) and pinned. she used a ton of pins though and then she twisted the botton pony and pinned it upward (hiding the part in the middle of my head, the part was still exposed on each side though). It was nearly the exact same look. A couple of days after the party when it started to fall apart i was able to unpin them and twist them back and got nearly the exact same look. This was all with weave though, but i'm sure if you play with it for a while you can get nearly the exact same look. HTH

You have enough hair to easily create that style by starting out with a brilliant rollerset, pincurl set, and then taking the first half and putting it into a ponytail with a non snagging band and creating a hole underneathe to tuck the ponytail under, into, and then pull it out on top. That is how you create the illusion of an actual piece there. Then get the loose bobby pins to secure the soft curls which will still be there.

Then take the lower half (as it's shown) and create the design and pin as you go. You don't need to use any piece, but you have to fan out the pincurls in a way which gives the illusion of fullness. I wish I could do a tutorial, but I have no way from where I am, so I hope you can get a picture of what I'm explaining.

It's very lovely and is even a great protective style... Good Luck!
