I have hair that is a couple of inches past my shoulder and would like to know how to dust my own ends and still keep them even.
Do you flat iron your hair first?
How often do you do it?
Is it worth the effort to do it yourself?

Pictures would be awesome. Thanks

I dust and trim my own hair. I always flatiron first so my hair hangs straight. I trim about every 2-3 months. It's worth the effort. I don't trust stylists anymore. They don't like dealing with my natural hair and always cut my hair in layers. My hair is not thick enough for layers.

i dust and trim my own hair. haven't been to the salon in at least a year :)

when i dust, i'm not that concerned with it coming out even, i'm more concerned with just getting rid of splits. i usually dust on flat ironed hair too.

I flat iron my hair to be sure it's as straight as possible if I'm trimming. If I'm just dusting, it doesn't matter to me whether it's straight because I'm usually just doing a S&D.

I dust my hair whenever I feel the need...usually every 3 months or so. I trim about once a year.

Words don't do justice for how worth it it is. It is SO unbelievably worth it. Every time I see a "My stylist cut my hair off" thread, I'm reminded of just how worth it it is. I don't trust anyone to cut my hair but me, and I've had enough experiences to justify those feelings. Self-trimming is one of the first things I recommended to people starting their hair journies because too often, ladies nurse their hair to health, start seeing some length, then let a stylist trim it all away. :ohwell: I haven't let a stylist near my hair with scissors in years, and I don't plan on going back. :)

Here are helpful tips for you since you're looking to dust/trim yourself.

Yes I do too. I have curly hair so what I do is twist it in sections while wet and snip and even amount off form each twist:yep:

It defnitely helps me because wiht natural hair unstraigthened it is very hard to underestimate how much you are cutting. By getting to know my hair I know EXACTLY how much to take off. A lot of stylists are not trained in trimming/cutting curly hair :nono:

After I put my twists in I clip the tips of the twists that feel raggety to me. My hair stays so moisterized that I haven't had to do that in 8 months. :D

This is exactly what I do and how I feel (I changed the wording a bit)...

I dust my own hair. Except for ht first relaxer which I let the stylist cut my hair for eveness. But after that I do it myself.

Stylist usually cut too much and when they do they cut in layers.

I usually flat iron, just so I can get a good hang and then cut it from there.

I've been doing it myself for a little over a year now. When I was relaxed, I just remembered tips I saw on television or got from books or from watching a stylist. My hairdresser never even realized I trimmed it myself. She thought I visited another stylist. I used to do it on wet hair though. I didn't flat iron it. And I did it whenever my ends looked raggedy. Yes, I think it was worth it because I could control how much was being cut off and how often.

I trim my own hair - I put it in twists, and cut off the raggedy ends by feel. I don't flatten it/press it because I never wear it that way, so it really makes no sense for me to cut it that way. I cut with the moon, and I've trimmed twice since taking my locs out, so about every 3 months or so.

I trim and dust my own hair. I am far more comfortable taking care of my own hair than putting it in someone elses hands. If I need a cut for style, I'll see a professional.

I haven't dusted but I intend to do so after I stop hiding my hair for the next few months. THanks for the tips ladies!
