I do, simply because i don't want my hair any thicker. i woun;dn't mind if i had finer strands. i find that protein conditioners coarsen my hair, making it harder to comb. I know it is vital for keeping hair stronger especially since i'm transitioing. I'm depending on my diet and vitamins to keep it strong instead. Anyone else doing the same thing?

Yes, I do the same because protein breaks my hair no matter how much moisture I put into my regimen! So I have eliminated any and all protein from my daily products. I use protein about every 4 weeks and only then mixed with a moisturizing conditioner and olive oil, followed with another moisturizing conditioner by itself (Aussie Moist)... and NO protein "treatments" for me (ie: Emergencee, Aphogee,). I still do not understand why companies will even tell you to use a protein based "daily" product everyday. A couple days ago I had to take back Nexxus Biotin creme for a refund because it started to break off my hair!... And the label said to "use daily"! Boy was I P/O'ed when I started seeing broken hairs in my hands when I finger combed!

So, what do you use? It seems like just about every conditioner has some sort of protein in it. Even my beloved lekair cholesterol has protein in it, but it doesn't make my hair dry or brittle. So, does it depend on the type of protein used in the conditioner?

I don't avoid protein really, but Aphogee has proven to be a bit too much for my hair. I have had 2 or those treatments and I hate the way my hair feels after. I did use a protein treatment from StyleOne and I loved it. My hair was still soft after, just thicker. But it is just hydrolyzed protein that you put in a conditioner. It does not harden or anything.

But, If I was natural, I think i would have less of a need for protein. Relaxers do a number on my hair so I use the protein treatments to balance things out.

I have also been wondering about this...because I noticed breakage in my Mom's hair and a lil in mine, I've been flat twisting our hair into updo's....and am just like WHT is the breakage about. We give daily mopisture via spray...but I don't know...I'm thinking maybe it is because I don't really have a good deep conditioner...and we haven't done hot oil treatments in a while...

We both have the same issue. When i was natural, i would overload my hair with protein in an effort to increase strength to retain length, lol does that make sense?. Like regular clockwork I used Aphogee, motions cpr and lekair cholesterol and everytime i end up with super hard unmaneable texture. I don't follow the instuctions of daily used protein, i'd have no hair left lol. the trick is finding the perfect blance which i haven't discovered yet. For now i'll have to stick with moisturizing conditioners, but they can't contain silicone oils, because they do the same as protein. Sounds like a no win situation.

Since many deep conditioners contain protein, I use vO5 Conditioners instead, i tried Nexxus Humectress which doesn't do anything for my hair. Keracare humecto contains silicones whichreacts on my hair after a few uses. If lekair cholesterol is working for you, keep using it.

Maybe you just need more moisture and a light protein.

Yea i avoid protein on a daily basis. I will usually do either a hardcore protein treatment like aphogee only right before i get a touchup. I will only do the softcore protein treatments like keraphix or mizani kerafuse....maybe once a month. Other than that, i am very cautious to make sure none of my leave-ins or dailys contain too much protein.
The only moisturizer that i know of that contains absolutely no protein at all is UBH creme moisturizer and the UBH dew moisturizer spray. They are both really good. I also use eQP Recovery Oil moisturizer when i need a little more oil in my moisturizer. Then i may use jojoba oil maybe 2x a week. the reason why i stay away from it is because it causes my hair to break as well. and if i use it in my daily products, my hair will loose its softness and become hard and stiff. And i love having thick full hair but boy oh boy do i hate how much the aphogee makes my hair revert....

AUBREY'S Organics Protein Conditioner - Does not work for me
NEXXUS KERAPHIX - My hair was dry as boiled wool when I used it, and I love NEXXUS as a haircare company
APHOGEE - Scared of it--Was used on me at a salon in 2003--stopped the breakage but I have not used it since
Nexxus Emergencee - This works great for me ! This is a staple
Frederic Fekkai RX Protein (Vanilla based scent) - This is the only true protein creamy conditioner that my hair reacted well to. However, I will not repurchase because I really did not notice any dramatic difference, especially for the price.

My hair is not crazy about protein at all. Nexxus Emergencee, KENRA & Rusk my hair allows ---other conditioners that have too much protein going on my hair is a dry mess afterwards.

Late last year I use several protein treatments following up with a deep conditioner. Well to some up the story, my hair broke off very badly and I had to get 6" cut off. That really set me back.

I avoid proteins, my hair does not respond favorably to them. I check the labels of conditioners to make sure I'm not getting any. My transition had gone very well and my hair is strong without them. I haven't had any issues with breakage.
