when is it best to use protective styles?

How long should your hair be before starting to do protective styles?
Right now my hair is not even shoulder length, but it is winter. Does the weather have anything to do with why some ladies use protective styles?

I think it's always best to do protective styles if you're attempting to grow your hair out.

If your hair isn't shoulder length then it's already in a protective style of sorts since it isn't rubbing on your shoulders, clothes, etc..

Hopefully someone with some more knowledge can help you out.
