When doing weaves do u use extra hair for the braids??

I have wondered for a while whether its a good idea to use that extra hair that soome hairdressers use for doing braids, I currently wear three tracks in the back for length( layered look) andd i actually left a hairdresser for not using the extra hair cuz it worried me ,, now im just wondering does it help keep the hair protected??

Yeah, it holds the braids together longer.
