hmmm....can you give us a little more info? I think it may be a little more helpful to list how you are flat ironing, what flat iron you use, and what products you use when you flat iron. Then maybe we can give advice on how to improve your technique.

ETA: I saw in another thread that dontspeakdefeat has a flatiron method on youtube. That might be helpful.

flat ironing in small sections, so usually about 1' in sections... my hair gets nice and straight and I only have to do 1 pass...

well my technique is horrible. i have a hard time getting the back fo my head. i normally part in 4s and part each section in half. i use a moisturizer and serum, im now narrowing it down to certain product wich will be generic paul mitchell the conditoner and argan oil. my hair has been responding well to this. I just need to get my flatiron skills right.
oh im like 10 weeks post and i use the digital chi that is a flat iron and curling iron. i really need to get another iron.

I apply my heat protector on wet hair, and then air or blow dry. This way I don't have to stop and apply it when I'm flat ironing. Also, make sure your hair is completely dry.

I use a rat tail to section my hair off, and then my finger to do parts within those sections. Starting from the bottom up, I take thin sections and place the flat iron at my roots. If I'm making curls, I'll rotate the flat iron like curlers, if I'm doing a straight style, I'll glide it straight down. It's all about practice. I can do shirley temple curls, feathers, as well as bone straight. It's all about how you twist your wrist. I do no more than 2 passes, and the 2nd pass is to usually straighten out crinkles the flat iron makes.

Oh, and by the time I get to the back of my head I start flat ironing in vertical sections, rather than in small chunks.... If that makes sense. Also, I'd skip using so many products before you straighten. It weighs your hair down a lot. I wash, condition, apply heat protector, and then use a moisturizing leave in, blow dry, flat iron, and then seal with oil.

Lil product on my head, small sections, SEDU and using a vent brush to do the "chase method" with the flatiron. Gives ya baby doll hair every time! lol

I honestly believe the promble many people have is using to much product. Clean hair with little flat iron better. *Flat iron small sections at a time.*

What's the point of the comb chase method? I tried it and I didn't particularly like it...probably because I was doing it wrong lol

But the perfect flat iron technique doesn't come over night...It took me years to get mine down. I think I got it down pretty much perfect because my hair comes out great each time. I part my hair into two sections. I start from the back and work my way forward. One thing that has made it easier for is instead parting a perfect line as I flat iron each section, I just make random parts that fit just the right amount of hair in the flat iron. When I get to my hair line in the front, I separate even smaller sections so I can get to my roots better. As a heat protectant I use Silk Elements. I really like it! It's not too heavy either. You def want to make sure before you flat iron your hair, it isn't weighed down with a lot of product. You want your hair to be as free from extra products as possible. Only put enough product to protect the hair. Oil + flat iron = no no so don't do it! Then finish off with some type of polish...wrap and BAM bangin hair!

comb-chase method

I agree, doing this makes sure all the hairs get straigtened.

I use a fine tooth, rat tail comb that is also heat resistant. I notice when I don't "comb-chase" my hair tangles because all of the hair is not getting straight.

I could never get light, silky, straight flat ironed hair until I realized my sections were too big. They are now 1/2 to 1 inch in width and thickness and it makes my flat ironing that much more precise. :)

I bought a Sedu last year to replace getting Dominican blowouts and now I'm almost mad I did. I'm all thumbs with the darn thing, am scared it's going to burn me, and I have no clue how to straighten the back of my hair. How do you guys do it? Use two mirrors?? :spinning:

comb-chase on small sections, pass the iron s l o w l y and with pressure, cool hair down with cold shot from blow dryer

Here is my Flat Ironing technique copied and pasted from another thread:yep:

Here are the two techniques that have left me with sleek consistently straight results.

First let me give my product recomendations.

Heat Protectant:

IC Fantasia Serum (for blowdrying) and spray (for flatironing)

For the blowdrying step...I highly recommend the Andis 1875 Tourmaline Ionic Blowdryer, here are my results using that blowdryer (with the comb attachment)

I Recommend Two Types of Flat Irons:

1) The MaxiGlide MP

Technique Using MaxiGlide MP (My results with the MaxiGlide)

Step 1: Blowdry wet hair using the Andis with the comb attachment in 8-10 sections, rewetting each section with spray bottle filled with water and dilluted leave-in of your choice. Apply nickel sized IC serum to each section and blowdry bantu knotting each finished section a you go to keep it out of your way.

Step 2: Flat Iron using MaxiGlide MP using one IC Spray on each section, in small 0.5 - 1" X 3" sections.

Sleep Routine: Pin Curl and tie with Satin Scarf

# 2: A 1 inch 100% ceramic flat iron I like the Amika (I have it in Zebra:love2:)

Technique using a 1 inch standard 100% ceramic iron:

Step 1: Blowdry wet hair using the Andis with the comb attachment in 8-10 sections, rewetting each section with spray bottle filled with water and dilluted leave-in of your choice. Apply nickel sized IC serum to each section and blowdry bantu knotting each finished section a you go to keep it out of your way.

Step 2: Hot Comb Roots. When using a standard 1" ceramic flat iron on tightly coily hair I recommend a hot combing step between blowdrying and flat ironing on the first 4 inches closest to the scalp to get consistently straight results. One pass at heat setting 8 on the comb should do the trick. Heres the electric Hot Comb I recommend by Hot Tools :

Step 3: Flat Iron (I would do 350+) in small 0.5 - 1" X 3" sections chasing the flat iron with a fine toothed comb.

Hope I broke it down throughly enough for you love! Good luck!!:yep:
