1. Low/No Heat
2. Low Manipulation/protective styles
3. Moisturize & Seal
4. Routine cleansing and conditioning
5. Pay attention/Listen to YOUR hair and react accordingly

1.) Very little to no heat
2.) Low manipulation (but not wearing the same style that puts stress on the edges for months at a time)
3.) No commercial hair coloring and/or bleaching
4.) Being extremely careful when using a comb/brush
5.) Washing and conditioning hair @ least once a week

1)Take pics - progress in length is hard to see without them.
2)Handle your hair as if it's the finest of fine silk
3)Moisture and seal nightly (or every other night) - make sure to wrap after.
4)Learn the science of hair - it really allows you to make sound decisions and eliminates too much experimentation, it also helps you stick with it because hopefully when you know better you do better.
5)Enjoy your hair - if that means using direct heat (I do), do so but refer to #4 and do it properly
That's a newbie's 5 cents worth:)
