What's the Benonite Buzz?

I keep hearing, seeing threads and blogs about how great benonite is? It's good for skin and hair someone posted.
Can you ladies catch me up, what is it, and what's it good for? Any side effects or dryness, damage? and is it just as good, or better than henna? Can you use it right after henna? waht's the wait time? etc...

I have cosmetic grade bentonite clay..... I use it when I make facial soaps designed for oily skin
here is the description from From Nature With Love

Bentonite Clay is a combination of montmorillonite and volcanic ash. Bentonite Clay is a highly absorbent clay that pulls oils and toxins from the skin and is one of the best clays for making clay poultices. It is best suited for oily skin. I just started using Aztec Healing clay mask which is bentonite. Its supposed to pull out the impurities in the pores, help with black heads, tighten the skin. I think there are more uses like skin ailments too. I got mine from the vitamin shoppe. You mix it with ACV or water and leave on for 20 minutes. Here was my original post about Bentonite in the "Bentonite Clay: I Need Some Answers" thread :

I use the Aztec Healing Clay from Whole Foods on my skin as a facial, it really cleared up my acne. I never thought about using it in my hair. It has many different uses you can even drink. I tried to drink it, not a good idea.

It comes in powder form and you mix it with water to form a mixture with a toothpaste like consistency. You can make it thicker or thinner it depends on how much water you add.

Here's some more info...

Bentonite Clay can absorb any toxic substances imaginable: impurities, harmful bacteria, poisons, pesticides, pathogens, parasites, etc. It does this without posing any nasty side effects in us, because as mentioned before, it can't be absorbed by us.

Bentonite can also be used externally, to treat skin problems and for detox baths. Some people have used Bentonite Clay to treat skin rashes with a lot of success. If you have skin eruptions such as acne, you should try applying Bentonite Clay on your skin, as it does a tremendous job of extracting/removing all the toxic matter buried inside your skin.


Bentonite can also be used in a detox bath, where we apply the Bentonite Clay around our body. It helps releases toxins out of our body, and it is a great routine to practice during colon cleansing.


Its very affordable I paid $6 or $7 for a large 1lb jar. A little goes a long way, I use it everyday and I still have plenty. I think my jar will last me a year!

your curks look fab. if youre thinking of switching from henna to benonite i may actually try this, cause I know youre a hennahead. can you wear your hair out curly without any product? cause thats what another poster has in her fotki and her curls look good, can I usethe clay on my hair too? tia

Thanks The picture in my signature is about 2 hours after using bentonite in the shower (like I would an instant conditioner except I focused on my scalp). After I rinsed it, I put my oil/butter concoction and a little Salerm 21 on it, and that's it. It's not product-free but I didn't use any curl defining products.

I started coloring my hair with synthetic dye again. Henna was fading too fast in Texas hardwater that I needed to do treatments weekly to keep it looking nice. I started using Bigen instead. I was still using henna once every 1-2 months for the conditioning. Well, guess what? Bentonite conditions better. It left my hair feeling soft, smooth, clean (although a little coated), and seriously elongating the curls. Henna is not known for leaving hair soft. Anywho, I also love that there are so many other uses for bentonite. I've been on this return-to-the-old-days kick and a product that does 3 or 4 things is winner in my house.
