Hmmmm. I did not know anyone had an issue with minerals in hair products, especially if they aid in hair health. I know my strands have seen enough minerals because I use 911 Leave in conditioner, which is loaded with vitamins and minerals. Maybe some think they are not good because the sound 'mineral' does make you think grainy, dry hair.

For my hair, mineral oil is very drying. I've been slowly eliminating products out of my regimine that contain mineral oil, but it hasn't been an easy task because it's in almost every product that I pick up. :(

Thanks Miracle & Bublnbrnsuga:
Maybe it's a drying concept and the types of hair it's being used on.
I never had a bad experience with them, I always thought that my hair was thriving with them... I have now focused on essential oils but I'll check on what my products at home contain & see if I experience any drying...

Maybe moisturizing when using products containing minerals would help to combat the drying effect.... :ohwell:

My hair responds much better to natural oils. Mineral oil doesn't agree with my hair. My hair is much softer and overall healthier since almost eliminating mineral oil from my products. Although, it may be good for another's hair. Everyone's hair isn't the same,

but you said minerals? If you mean stuff like calcium and potassium... that's drying to the hair. WGO has that in it and when I switched to another oil, my hair behaved and looked better too.

For some people, mineral oil is drying to the hair Ashee.

I eliminated it for a while and just used natural oils all the time. However I'm slowly coming back to using products which contain mineral oil. When mineral oil products are combined with products that contain water eg leave-ins or applied to wet hair, I find personally I don't get the drying effects, which can occur if you use only mineral oil based products alone eg Dax kocatah, blue magic, posner bergamot or plain vaseline on the hair all by itself.

Baileys:

A few of the products that you mentioned also contain patroleum, maybe the minerals are ther to off-set the patroleum
I do realize that I use a lot of my products on my wet hair...
-Thanks! :)

I say if the product has been working for you, by all means don't stop. I have some products that are "no-nos" in here but they are doing good by me.

DITTO... :)

From Nappturality website article about ingredients to avoid in products:

2. MINERAL OIL & PETROLATUM: The best baby oil is made from almonds. But the oil which being sold as baby oil is 100% mineral oil. Mineral oil is a derivative of crude oil (petroleum) that is used industrially as a cutting fluid and lubricating oil. This commonly used petroleum ingredient coats the skin and hair just like plastic wrap. The skin's natural barrier is disrupted as this plastic coating inhibits its ability to breathe and absorb the Natural Moisture Factor (moisture and nutrition). The skin's ability to release toxins and wastes is impossible through this "plastic wrap," which can promote acne and other disorders. It further hinders normal skin respiration/transpiration by keeping oxygen out. This process slows down skin function and normal cell development causing the skin to prematurely age. Holding in large a mounts of moisture in the skin can "flood" the biology and may result in immature, unhealthy, sensitive skin that dries out easily. Petrolatum - A petroleum-based grease that is used industrially as a grease component. Petrolatum exhibits many of the same potentially harmful properties as mineral oil.

Honestly, this stuff belongs in your engine, not on your hair. Regardless of "Well, my Grandma used vaseline on her hair and it grew ", the bottom line is this stuff is bad. It was bad for Grandma and it is bad for you. Period.

But I agree with Champange_Wishes...if a product with mineral oil in it is working for you, don't just throw it out because of the bad rep of it. ;)

It hasnt been affecting the health of my hair so I continure to use it. But I dont apply it directly to my skin or my scalp. Clogged pores are the pits :(

Wait- I thought the OP was speaking of minerals, such as magnesium, calcium in hair products?

Hey, she DID say minerals! I just assumed she meant mineral oil. Sorry.

So what type of minerals in hair products are considered wrong???

I was at the bss store today and I was trying to find a hair "grease" that didn't contain petrolatum, mineral oil, or lanolin (I heard that was a no-no too) Is there such a product that comes in grease form but doesn't contain those ingredients?

I'm thinking any minerals...
Is there a difference in which one is in the product?

Although mineral oils and petroleum are natural they are NOT for everyone. I know for me, mineral oils and petroleum cause severe itching and in some cases burning if I apply it to my scalp. I use it on the ENDS of my hair ONLY because it seals in the moisture. I think it's all about body chemistry, if it works for you use it (don't let anyone one convince you other wise) but for me it's a no-no if I try to use it on my scalp (I only use these products on my ends) and I use natural oils and butters on my hair. I've had really good results with shea, mango, avocado butters and other natural oils.:)

My hair is loving mineral oil. I started applying the amla oil over my moisturizer (unbraid spray mixed with scurl) and my hair is softer than before. I did a preshampo treatment with the amla and some honey and my hair was so soft it freaked me out...lol. And after I dried it I applied a little amla oil over my leave in and my hair was very soft and tame (see pic in siggy) Good stuff for me :)

Is Amla mineral oil??
I have Emami amla Plus and it says Herbal Hair Oil on the bottle. It has Avocado, Henna, Almond, and Amla in mine.
Is this a misrepresentation of the Amla Oil from the Dubar Company?

Thanks poohbear..I'm sure you'll be there in no time :)

Ashee the amla I have from Dabur has mineral oil as it's first ingredient. It's green in color. I don't know anything about Emmani(sp?). Who manufactures yours?

I got it from Natural Plus' website..
I think the manufacture is Emami. Is Paraffin the first one listed on yours?
