What's so bad about Mineral Oil/Petroleum?

i would also like to know why. i went to the BSS to and i had such a hard time trying to avoid products containing these.

Here's the thing. They aren't bad. Not for everyone.

If used properly, your hair can thrive. I'm not saying every head will thrive, but it's just like anything else.

If you misuse keratin protein, what's going to happen to you? Messed up hair. Also some people's hair doesn't like keratin protein and however they use it, it just doesn't work for them. Petroelum/mineral oil... same thing.

The person with the longest hair on this board oils her hair with melted vaseline :yep::lachen: I think her hair is thigh length?

The reason many people don't use it is because it creates a tough to get through film on the hair. This film can create a waterproof layer over time, which stops moisture from getting into the hair. If you have petroleum/mineral oil build up, conditioners won't work well, leave ins won't work well and you won't be able to properly moisturize your hair... your hair will get dry.

Natural oils are washed away much easier while still providing shine and "sealing" properties.

With that said, I don't use petroleum personally, but there are many people who do and can use it and have healthy hair. You have to decide for yourself what is good for you and what works in your hair.

Imo it's generally bad if:

You use multiple products with mineral oil/petroleum
You use a leave in product with mineral oil/petroleum daily
You use mineral oil/petroleum and you don't use a strong enough shampoo to get it out of your hair

Even so, some people do ALL those things and have a great head of hair

Tiffers stands out in my mind because look at all her pretty hair :) and she swears by a product that has a good amount of mineral oil in it.

Do your research, make your own decisions :yep:

Thank you Neith...I needed that explanation!!!! Makes a lot of sense. Even though I'm a newbie, I'm sure that we don't need to be afraid of every thing out there but rather understand it and use it in moderation or according to OUR hair needs. I was like Love, Love spending an hour at the BSS rejecting everything with MO or Petro. Thanks again for that 411.

Neith summed it up nicely. :yep:
I won't touch mineral oil/petroluem with a ten foot pole, but that is because my hair told me so.

Something to think about...

"Mineral Oil. Clear, odorless oil derived from petroleum that is widely used in cosmetics because it rarely causes allergic reactions and it cannot become a solid and clog pores. Despite mineral oil’s association with petroleum and the hype that it is bad for skin, keep in mind that petroleum is a natural ingredient derived from the earth and that once it becomes mineral oil USP (cosmetics- and pharmaceutical-grade mineral oil), it has no resemblance to the original petroleum. Cosmetics-grade mineral oil and petrolatum are considered the safest, most nonirritating moisturizing ingredients ever found (Sources: Cosmetics & Toiletries, January 2001, page 79; and Cosmetic Dermatology, September 2000, pages 44–46). Yes, they can keep air off the skin to some extent, but that’s what a good antioxidant is supposed to do; they don’t suffocate skin! Moreover, mineral oil and petrolatum are known to be efficacious in wound healing, and are also among the most effective moisturizing ingredients available (Source: Cosmetics & Toiletries, February 1998, pages 33–40)."

"Petrolatum. Vaseline is pure petrolatum. For some unknown and unsubstantiated reason, petrolatum has attained a negative image in regard to skin care, despite solid research to the contrary. Topical application of petrolatum can help the skin’s outer layer recover from damage, reduce inflammation, and generally heal the skin (Source: Acta Dermato-Venereologica, November–December 2000, pages 412–415). See also mineral oil."
