neturalizing shampoo after doing a relaxer and you did this over a period of time? Meaning everytime you did a relaxer you didn't use a neturalizing shampoo.

The neutralizing shampoo is used to 1) stop the relaxer from further straightening your hair and 2) removes all traces of the relaxer from the hair. Otherwise, it could result in breakage. I once had a friend relax my hair and she used a regular shampoo vs. the neutralizing shampoo. When I told another friend about it the next day, she suggested that I shampoo with the neutralizer to ensure that all traces of the relaxer were removed from my hair.

hope this helps!

Make sure to shampoo with neutralizing shampoo (this will be included in the kit). Be sure that you don't use leftover shampoo from around the house. General shampoos are not a neutralizing formula; they dont contain the appropriate chemicals and using them may make your hair come out. Lather up your scalp and hair thoroughly about 3 times. After the neutralizing shampoo has been rinsed out for the last time, towel dry your hair.

It's important to use a shampoo with a lower pH to neutralize the high pH of the relaxer. The reason this is important is the pH of the neutralizing shampoo stops the reaction of the lye. Using a regular shampoo will allow your hair to continue to break down beyond the point where you want it to be.

I was asking this question because when I started doing my own perm back in 2001 I use to not always use a neutralizing shampoo. I started doing this because i forgot to get some neutralizing shampoo when I did my perm so I thought it was ok. I'm real naive about haircare but I'm learning so much now. I know when I started going to the hairstylist in 2002 she ask me what I had been doing to my hair and she told me that I need to do a neutralizing shampoo after every relaxer. i haven't did a relaxer since but I was sitting down thinking about everything I did to my hair. I think thats the reason my hair is in the state that it's in now......BREAKING!

What happens.........

COMPLETE BREAKAGE!

My mother always did at-home perms growing up. When I got to college I decided to do my first one. I used regular shampoo. Nothing really happened..at first. Then week by week I kept losing my hair. Not bald spots or anything but hair chunks in my comb. It was awful. I learned the hard way...Neutralize

No neutralizing after relaxer = BREAKAGE!

My cousin did this in the past and couldn't understand why her hair was breaking...it was because she used regular shampoo after relaxing.

The time I was swimming in 'hair ignorance' I did not use a neutralizing shampoo and thought it was a waste of money. My hair stayed the same length and was always breaking. Now that I know better, a neutralizing shampoo is a Must after every relaxer and this has contributed to my hair being much healthier.
