What will happen if I relax after washing my hair?

I am going away this weekend and want to look nice. I have just come out of braids a week ago, and I was trying to follow the Hair Lady's advice of wating 2 months after braids until relaxing. (actually I was only going to wait about 2-3 weeks while deep conditioning). I washed my hair and have been flat ironing it, but I've got 1 1/2 inches of new growth and my hair is not as smooth as I want it to be. Also, I realized that when I get in the jacuzzi/tub it'll be back to the Kelis fro (from the hair type page).

I could go to get a touch up today before I go away this afternoon, but I've already manipulated my scalp. Has anyone done this without problems, or is it definately a death sentence for my scalp? Does this mean major burns? Cause if it definately does, I guess I'll be saying "My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard" this weekend.

(PS- I know that Kelis's hair can look good curly, but there have been times when it was really out there. Please don't think I'm bashing the woman.)

When did you wash your hair? I've never relaxed on the same day as washing. However, I have relaxed the following day without any problems. I was not in braids prior to that though. I've never worn braids and do not know how that will affect my hair's strength or scalp, so I cannot comment on that.

I'm not concerned about the wait time with the braids, it's the hair washing that troubles me. I did it early this morning, and I've been flat ironing it.

I have done it before with no adverse effects but you have to be really careful. If your scalp has been manipulated or scratched you may want to wait a couple of days. You don't want to get burned by the chemical.

I'd say wait to get the relaxer done. If your hair starts to burn too bad before your hair is ready, you may have to rinse before the relaxer has properly processed. That would be a true tragedy...irritated scalp + underprocessed hair. Can you put your hair in a bun if it gets wet or frizzes up because of the jacuzzi?

I wash my hair every day, but if I know that I'll be applying a relaxer I make sure that at least 24 hours has passed since my last shampoo, otherwise my scalp "pores" are still open and my scalp will burn from the relaxer, no matter how much oil I use to base my scalp.

Okay, okay ladies. You've convinced me that it's just not happenin'. I will wait until next week. In the meantime, I'll be practicing my raspy Macy Gray voice(LOL). Seriously, though, I'll be okay, just a little fuzzy. But it's better than suffering the potential damage to the scalp. Hugs to all y'all who answered the call!!!!!

for what its worth - id try to find a dominican salon and let em work their magic.
