Are there any styles that you think should not be worn in a professional workplace.

I read sometime ago in a magazine of a young women who was asked not to wear her cornrows. This I thought to be outlandish. But are there some styles that should not be worn that are just not suitable as a professional?

I think that any style can be worn in the workplace if it looks classy and neat. It shouldn't look "ghetto".

My brother couldn't wear his dreds to work because they were messy and nasty looking. He cut it off and grew them back in really neat and they had no problem with them.

I would skip drastic, "fashion" colors like cranberry reds and violet blues. If I had braids I would probably either wear a bob style, or have them fairly small and kept pinned up in a bun. Really it depends on where you work. I would be super conservative while I scoped the place out to see what would fly and what wouldn't.

I agree about the colors and that's generally it. Even if there are wild colors, I think the hair should be styled decently.

I think nasty looking and crusty should be the standard as well has the exclusion of rainbow colors.

If you work in insurance or business, your hair needs to be very conserative.

I agree with you purtygurly. I don't think it's so much the style if it's neat and classy. I once worked in a professional office with a girl who came to work with a multi-colored basket weave drooped over her left eye. No one on our floor was ready for that. The multi-colored basket weave is not a professional hairstyle and I will admit that I can't stand that style (for myself - no offense to anyone). Ugh!

I wondered where that basket went. My little girl lost it during her Easter hunt.

Even the so called ethnic styles can be worn if they are kept neat. But beware, no ratty looking dreads that are not cared for of have lint in them or lopsided fros that have pieces sticking out of them and are in dire need or an "even up". Also, I would not use a giant pick as an accessory (sticking out of the fro).

Now, as for weaves and relaxed styles, I would not do the fashion colors(any hair color that does not occur in nature), and I'd leave the After 7 look at home. This look includes glitter /sequins all over the hair, and the six foot tall fountain of hair fried into ribbon shapes atop the haead. Kepp your styles under six inches above the head.

I agree with this, and Bett1e's observation about crusty hair.

As long as your hair and scalp are clean, then basically whatever industry you work in should dictate what style is appropriate. For example, law firms are very conservative, so a permed bob, kempt braids, or an afro would be acceptable but afro puffs wouldn't. If I worked at a trendy hair salon, the afro puffs might not only be acceptable but encouraged.
