Is it true that regular peroxide (the kind you put on a scar) can be used to lighten hair??

If so has anyone done it?

What are the effects of doing it, is it damaging?

yes, you can lighten the hair with peroxide but it is very damaging. but i guess some intense conditioning would help.

I did it back in junior high, and it worked, but I can't imagine doing it now. I'm sure it has to be damaging.

OMG! Do not do this! i did this to my hair, and true it did lighten it, but it totally damanged my hair. About 3inches broke off the ends and the rest looked a mess, it took 3 years to get my hair healthy again.

Yeah I did this in junior high too. I thought I had cute lil "highlites" too- but the color was a brassy orange tint. Then it made my hair shaft swell where the peroxide was put on. It made that hair more porous and it wouldn't hold moisture for nada. Its permanent too. :ohwell: I wouldn't recommend doing it-- that hair will be so weak and will probably be gone within the next 6 months or so from even regular handling. Straight peroxide is just too strong. :( Some people even use lemon juice to lighten up their hair. Never tried it myself.

I did this before in high school it made my hair a light brown but I didn't use it all over my hair.

Same happened to me! We used to do this all the time back in the early 90's. Please, please do not do this... :nono:

Ive done it before as a patch test... It worked but as others have said it makes ur hair really dry... I knew a girl u used to put it (H202) in her shampoo. She claims it was less drying than just using it straight. Her hair was relativley healthy but I never wanted light hair bad enuf to try it :D

I remember doing this when I was younger. If I remember right, I used it full strength, and blow-dried it to death until the color lifted. I didnt do my whole head, just some highlights, but I'm sure it was very damaging.

I wonder what would happen if you added conditioner to it...

I know a girl that went from dark brown to a reddish brown that (luckily) suited her. her hair wasn't in great condition even befroe she did it though.
