What is the purpose to stretching your relaxer?

I am transitioning right now so I have not had a perm since February of this year. I see some ladies on here talking about stretching their relaxers. What is the purpose of stretching your relaxer?

Im natural but i know lot of ladies stretch their relaxers to prevent overlapping and overprocessing the hair that has already been relaxed.

For me, I want to avoid chemicals on the scalp so often and it helps to avoid overlap. Avoiding overlap makes keep hair thicker over time.
