Ms Lala said:3c/4a mix, pretty curls. I think it has too much curl definition to be 4b, I have 4a/b hair.
LocksOfLuV said:So type 3s are the only type to have curls? I am not trying to pick on you but I am seriously confused. Cause if that's the case my 4b hair is a 3a, since I have coilies everywhere!
I don't know.. I think people have this hair typing thing def. mixed up. It's not about curl definition it's about level of kinkiness and coarseness (if that's word). Or maybe I have the whole thing mixed up?
The OPs hair shows nothing of 3 to me. But maybe it's only me.![]()
bmoreflyygirl said:I have curls too and I'm a 4a (My curls are like the size of pen springs). My hair doesn't feel kinky at all. I don't even comb it. I just run my fingers through it in the shower. No tangles at all. I believe the distinction for 4a or 4b was that a had a curl pattern and b had more of a zig zag pattern. And that the distinction between 3's and 4's was the size of the curl. 3c curls are a little looser and bigger than 4a's. And type 3 hair has that glossy shine to it whereas type 4 has more of a sheen. That's just my opinion. Pepole have their own ideas of each hair type though.
LocksOfLuV said:Okay because my hair grows in coils and in my opinion it is very coarse. I consider myself a 4b with 4a parts but the 4a parts don't make up the bulk of my hair. It looks like the OPs and I say her hair is a 4a/b.
So I guess the whole hair typing thing is sort of a figment of our minds-how we perceive it.

Keen said:I would say you are 3c. Definetely not in the 4 family. Your hair seem to have a lot of tight wave but no kinks. From my understanding type 4 seem to have kinky ruly hair (with z patterns being type 4c). That's just my opinion.
Ms Lala said:All type 4 hair is not coarse. I have seen type 4 hair that is more fine. I know white women with type 2 hair that is coarse, not kinky, but coarse. I have seen many Asians with type 1 hair that is very coarse. According to the hair chart I've seen type 4b doesn't have as much of a curl pattern. The hair in that pic looks more like 4a with some 3 to me. Type 4b does not look like ringlets which is how the OP's hair looks. This is not a science so I'm not saying for certain. This is an excerpt from naturally curly.com I believe they use andre walker hair typing system. THis is what I go off of when typing my own and when others ask
"There are two subtypes of Type 4 hair: Type 4A, tightly coiled hair that, when stretched, has an "S" pattern, much like curly hair; and Type 4B, which has a "Z" pattern, less of a defined curl pattern (instead of curling or coiling, the hair bends in sharp angles like the letter "Z"). Type 4A tends to have more moisture than Type 4B, which will have a wiry texture. But what if your hair has been chemically straightened? How can you tell which subtype you belong to if your hair is relaxed? You'll need at least one inch of new growth to tell. Pull at the roots. If you can see a definite curl pattern, then it's an A, if not, then it's a B."

LocksOfLuV said:Oh BTW I am relaxed and I stretch 12-16 weeks at a time. I usually get about 2 inches of highly coiled newgrowth at that time. So I am very familiar with my hair type.
