My hair keeps on coming out, and I don't know why!

I wash and deep condtion twice a week. Rollet set. Moisturize every night with WGO. Do Aphogee treatments every 6 wks. Relax every 2.5 to 3.5 months. Trim as needed. Take biotin, niacin, flax seed oil, and a centrum multi. About 2 wks ago, I added MSM. I have been doing the rest for over a year now and for the past couple of months...maybe two, my hair has been coming out in clumps. From the process of washing to the roller set, I will lose probably two handfuls of hair. Every day I lose almost a handful. Every time...and I mean everytime I take my hands through my hair, I come out with 10-20 strands. I put my hair in a low pony tail and there are several hairs hanging down through the ends clumped on my shirt. And they aren't small hairs...they are all long hairs from the root. And this has been going on for a couple of months. I'm surprised I have any hair left. Can someone please tell me what is going on!?!

Girl im so sorry this is happening to you, im not exactly sure what it is....i do remember though when i was around 10, my mom was combing my hair, and clumps started coming out for no apparent reason....however it stopped and it didnt even look like i had lost the hair...im guessing it was hormone related....also are you stressing about anything recently??? it could be stress related...if it persist i would go get that checked...i hope things work out :(

I agree with Jaded Faerie about hormones and stress. Checking with a doctor to make sure it isn't hormone related can be very helpful and if it is, that can be adjusted. That includes checking for pregnancy.

I also agree with Weaveitup about using a moisturizer in your hair, like a good leave-in conditioner not just putting oil on it. Is your deep conditioner a moisturizing conditioner?

Are you on any medications?

Have you been taking any medications??? I took Accutane and had major shedding for about two months.

Actually I have been dealing with a lot. A lot of stuff has been going on with my body and I was told that that I have a hormonal imbalance. But the other symptoms that I have been dealing with have been there for almost a year and this just started happening.

What can I do to check my hormones? The doctor just put me on birth control, but I dont' want to take that. I know it's not pregnancy related cuz a sista still has yet to have sex (can me getting married come any sooner?!?!? lol).

I do use a leave in with my Wild Growth Oil before I roller set. I think it is Fantasia IC with Aloe. I have been using Cathy Howse conditioner. That ran out, so this week I used Pantene Relaxed and Natural.

Could relaxing be the culprit?

I'm not sure. I used to relax every 6 wks with no problem. My hair was still thick, still long. After reading comments on the board, I just started stretching to every 2.5-3.5 the last two times that I relaxed. And I do notice that right after I get a relaxer my hair doesn't come out like it does for about 3 washes. Then it starts coming out again.

Hey caramelicious. Really sorry to hear about your hair issue. I've been having lots of shedding, myself. However, I think the fact that you've been losing long hairs from the root is okay...I've been experiencing the same thing lately. It's short hairs that would have me screaming because those hairs (i believe) mean that breakage is occuring. Losing long hair (in my case, anyway) is a seasonal occurance and doesn't affect the overall health of my hair. Perhaps this is what's happening to you. Did you recall a similar problem this time last year?

Can't blame a sister for trying!!

Sorry to hear about that. If the doctor has already told you that you have a hormonal imbalance then that may be one of the main things going on with you. I know that there are hormonal balance teas that I've seen at the health food stores, one is made by Yogi tea. I can understand you not wanting to take birth control pills. The one time my hair came out like that it was due to both stress and the water in the area I moved into. I hope this works out for you.

This has never happened before. And I just started taking care of my hair about a year ago!

Hormonal balance teas?? Hmmm....I'm going to have to check that out. Thanks!

Now I would love to be natural, but I don't think I have the patience to go through the process of getting there!

Have you tried Nutrine garlic shampoo(unscented). This helped me out alot when I went thru the same situation a couple years ago. HTH

I sometimes get a lot of shedding... usually its seasonal... I also get a lot if I switch products too much. My scalp doesn't seem to like that at all!

Aw, sorry to hear that. I would think about going to the dermatologist, or the regular doctor and asking him/her what is wrong. Sometimes you make take a certain vitamin too long, and there can be some type of excess in your body that loosens the pore through which the hair grows out, making it easy to shed. Maybe that could be the case with you. I read that somewhere, but I really don't remember which vitamin it was. You should do a search on that. I'm kinda new here still, and I dont know everything, but if there was a way you could strengthen your scalp or whatever, that might work, to make sure that the pores are tight enough to keep the hair stranded. Either way, check with a physician. I wish you the best of luck. Ciao

Caramel, my hair used to do the same. I used Emergence and Keraphix alternating weeks and it stopped. I also switched to Nioxin hair products and would alternate with them.

What you said about shedding after a relaxer and hair hanging loose from the ponytail...me me me in the past.

Since you do Aphogee every 6 weeks you may want to do a protein treat more often. Followed by moist of course.

im going to the doctor sat- i have straight up PATCHES of hair missing, i think from low iron and dietary changes. i am taking b complex and resuming EPO which i love. go to the doctor first to make sure it isnt something worse.

I think you should lose the Aphoghee treatments for while and see what happens. Sounds like a possible case of protein overload gone unchecked.
Some people's hair just can't take such a strong, regular dose....

Hi, Miscarmelicious I am sorry to hear about your hair troubles. I went through the same thing a few years ago. I was losing hair left and right. My skin started breaking out. My hair problems were related to stress and hormonal imbalance also. My doctor prescribed a low dose birth control pill and this helped me alot, but you have to do what you think is best for your body. I started getting regular protein treatments (be sure not to overdo protein, this can cause problems also) and I started deep conditioning my hair every week. I took a while but slowly my hair stopped coming out as much. I am currently experiencing some extra shedding, but I think it is seasonal so I have started doing an extra light protein treatment in between heavy protein treatments ( I am hoping the shedding will stop soon). I hope your health improves soon. Take care.
