can anyone explain what this is? some sort of expensive wig? I heard that someone i know is getting one custom made for $500 so she doesn't have to wear weaves anymore?

Not a wig - more like something you would wear at the back of your head (am I saying this right ladies??) Similar to a ponytail (but not...does this make sense??)

I thought it was the same thing as a half-wig...sometimes called "instant weave"....I could be mistaken. :look:

These were very popular during my mother's generation (the 1960's) among both, black and white women.

My mother had one as well. It was a long, dark brown one, and even had it's own carrying case!. As a kid, I took it out and put it over my head, pretending it was my hair, LOL!

Here's what they looked like back in the day:

Falls are so easy and fun. I used to wear one about 10 years ago. I've even considered getting one now for when I want to be cute going out to the club.

Yup, falls are basically an easy quick weave without the glue or needle and thread. They usually come with a comb attached. You leave about an inch or two of your own hair out, the rest goes in a stocking cap. You put the fall on and blend it with the hair your left out. Instant weaves/falls are convenient hair without the wait. And if anyone is like me you can snatch that bad boy off at night and not worry about sleeping "cute".

Ive never heard of a $500 fall though..... the one I have is pretty quality and 100% human hair..... and that cost about $80. And I thought that was expensive, but Ive definitely worn it enough to get my moneys worth. Anyway, you said it was custom-made so..... I guess the designer is making it to somehow blend in perfectly with her hair texture, color, etc. Well I hope it lasts her a LONG time at that price. :)

A fall is a half wig like everyone else is saying. I think your friend was talking about getting a lacefront. They can be custom made and can cost about $500. If you wore a lacefront you would no longer have to worry about wearing weave or blending issues.

wow, i am in awe:eek: ! can't believe i was behind the times on this piece of hair info. now i want a fall! is it the beauty supply stores that you guys are buying them for $20 & $80 bucks? & are they labeled as "falls"?
so, i did email my gf to ask her details about this. she has a new stylist at a salon called the Santa Cruz Salon which I've never heard of, but this was her response to me:

-Ebony, you have to see my hair. For starters, he braids soooo well, and so smooth, that you don’t even feel him braiding it & he braids with a colored thread so it is easy for you to identify and remove. With me, I have now joined your ranks of wet and wavy which Steven says is the ONLY texture black people should be wearing because it is closest to our texture.
-He hates YAKY and silky hair. He does not do closure pieces, wraps (that is a ghetto word in that salon) no hot irons, no glue in the gray bottle, no black plastic vats of brown suffocating jells, no bobby pins. This salon is about hair that is flowing and moving. Oh, no hair oil what so ever. He is like a white salon for people of color. He has equal clientele and works a lot with people who have various type of REAL hair. He’s great and I think he would be wonderful for you.
-OH, he only works with hair from LUGOS. PERIOD! Which is not a problem because I bought the best hair , 8 oz and had some left over for a pony tail, for $133.00. Now how much does this new me cost? $400.00 and I pay it with pleasure.
-The best part is Ebony is that he makes falls and wigs and is going to make me a fall for $500 so I don’t have to get weaves and just take care of my hair underneath. You won’t even know it. It will be like Tyra’s lace wig/ but only 3/4 of her length and without the lace.
SUCH A DEAL! And it is cost effective. I love going to the salon, when I leave their, I feel like I am ready to do a PANTENE commercial. Go for a consultation, its Free girl!

Hey, Soror!

Back to our regularly scheduled post: I think they changed the name from "fall" to half wig to "instant weave" to sound more modern and that someone wouldn't have to feel like they were wearing a wig (even though they are). Some people feel fine wearing 10 yards of a weave but "fake" putting a wig on their head. Go figure!
