I went to GNC to get some MSM and found out that it is made from shellfish. For religious reasons I can not consume shellfish. Is there a viable alternative to MSM with no shelffish that promotes healthy hairgrowth?

go to your local health food store. MSM is more for the texture and to soften the hair it doesn't really help too much with actual growth

Can you apply a shellfish by-product topically? If so, perhaps you can add it to an existing cream for scalp massage.

ETA: One doen't have to take MSM supplements to get sulfur. We can always get it through foods like eggs, garlic, onions.

Is MSM all of it made from Shellfish??? bonjour
I always thought MSM naturally appears in all food but not as much as it used to.
*goes to check her MSM bottle*

ETA: My bottle from the Vitamin Shoppe says "No fish" on the label.

GNC MSM is probably made in a plant that manufacturers shellfish so that's why they put it on the label.

You could either try a different brand of MSM or just stick to food sources.

I have a shell-fish allergy, and I've been using PP MSM with no problems.

Good luck!

Hey PME_LADY Thats weird your MSM contains selfish:confused: i did not know msm contains some unless written in the ingredients.

I use the Carlson MSM SULFUR and it does not mention shelfish i m copy down all it says on the label:

msm does help in growth as it extends your genetically programmed hair cycle allowing you to grow more hair before the hair falls; in a way you grow more hair- not faster but what happens if lets say your cycle permits the hair to grow for 2 years before the hair (all figures are hypothetical lol) is replaced and your growth rate is 0.5" per month maybe you could only get to brastrap; but by taking the msm or fo-ti for instances you extend the growth cycle the anagen phase (growth phase) before reaching the telogen phase (resting phase) so you end up growing more hair that you programmed to grow in more time than the alloted time it takes for each hair to fall. now all the other aids and vits can help in accelerating the growth if you more inches per month if you are looking for best growth aides (zinc, silica, biotin, hair vits, aminos, spirulina among others) but the msm mostly elongates the hair and extends your hair cycle.;)

I was at the health food store yesterday and asked about this. MSM doesn't contain any shellfish, BUT glucosamine chondroitin does! Sone MSM (not pure) have a mix of MSM, glucosamine & chondroitin

Note: Glucosamine sulfate is derived from the shells of ocean-growing shellfish. It is processed to remove all residues of protein and impurities, yielding pure glucosamine sulfate as the final material.

HTH

I have pure powder msm from the Vitamin Shoppe. It does not contain any fish/shell fish product.

I don't consider msm a hair growth aid, but it does a great job on my joints.

My label reads:

Directions:
As a dietary supplement, take 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon daily.

Other Ingredients:
None.

Does Not Contain:
Yeast, corn, wheat, sugar, salt, soy, starch, dairy, citrus, fish or animal derivatives, preservatives, artificial colors or flavors added.

Warnings:
Do not use this product if you are allergic to sulfur. Store in a cool, dry place. Keep out of reach of children. Tamper resistant. Do not use if outer seal is broken. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

I don't know if anyone else has said this but look for a vegetarian supplement, they usually cost a little more but I think they work better sometimes, they have less crap in them.
