What else should I ask/tell the stylist?

Natural Again
This is my 1st time going to a salon since I decided to really start taking care of my hair and I do not want any of my hard work to go down the drain. I am getting a touch-up. I already know to watch out for the scissor happiness but what else should I ask, tell, or look for? Should I bring my own conditioner, combs, etc., or just see what she uses? Any and all help would be appreciated

Ask what type of relaxer she uses and if its lye or no lye, make sure she relaxes the new growth only and if you are gettin a trim show her physically how much you want cut off.

Ill think of more

* what they use to base u with
* what they use to protect ur previously relaxed hair

You should bring ur own conditioner/leave-in but don't tell her/him u have it until she/he tells YOU what will b used on ur hair.

Regarding combs and such, most bs's use wide tooth combs and fine tooth combs (for rollersets) so u shouldn't have to bring ur own.

Make sure she is gentle while prepping u for the relaxer, while relaxing and while rinsing. Make sure she doesn't speed thru the neutralizing process.

Lastly, make sure she applies a deep conditioner to ur hair that requires you sit under the dryer for at least 10 mins (my personal favorite)... and then after she rinses that out, make sure she applies a moisturizing conditioner (ur own or hers).

Good Luck and don't b scurrreeed...

I have one piece of advice for you to take with you to the stylist. It's something very simple, but something some of us don't do.

Speak up.

If you have a question about a product or procedure, if you want to get or give clarification on how you expect your hair to be handled, or if you simply want the stylist to do or not do something.....say so. Remember, stylist or not, no one cares for your hair more than you do. Don't sit there and cringe while the stylist does something you may be uncomfortable with.

It's your hair and you expect the stylist to treat it (and you) with care and respect.

ITA SPEAK UP! I can't tell you how many times I sat there and let her do something to my hair I didn't like or want. The whole time I would sit there yelling at her in my head worried about what she would say or do if I spoke up. If you speak up they'll take you more seriously. If she gives you a hard time about it then you know that your hair is not in his/her best interest- just your $$.

That will definitely be hard for me to speak up I know but I will just have to think of how I want my hair to grow. Many a time I have sat and did the same thing, just yelled in my head what r u doing? don't do that. This time I will speak up tho. I must. I hate confrontation but I have to speak up regardless! Thanks a lot ladies

My biggest rule of thumb when going to a new sylist is NEVER GET A TOUCHUP OR CUT ON THE FIRST VISIT because too drastic and permanent for me to "test drive" on someone new! I strongly suggest getting a wash and set to see how the stylist handles your hair while providing a less critical service. Gives you opportunity to observe "real time" situation and see whether you're happy with the wash and set. Chances are, if they can't make you happy with a wash and set, you ain't gonna be happy with a relaxer . . .

However, if you MUST do a touch first, then I 2nd, 3rd, what everyone else said about speakingup, paying attention, watch like a hawk to make sure the right relaxer is used and not too much is cut off, etc. etc.

I would love to allow a milder treatment like a wash & set but I do need this touchup yesterday

. So which relaxer am I looking for lye or no lye? and the base goes on my hair?
