What did I do wrong? Horrible excuse for a braidout… (pics)

I don’t know what I did wrong --- did I use too many products? Not enough??!!?? Too many/not enough braids?? Can you ladies who are experienced at doing braidouts tell me what you use as far as products and techniques to have a good-looking braidout? [Pics are in my album if you want to see my outcome…]

Here’s what I did:

1.) Condition washed my hair --- I left it damp so that it could air dry in the braid

2.) Parted about 18 sections of hair (not all at one time I might add...)

3.) In each section I applied Frenchee’s to my scalp (not important), applied a little moisturizer (Organics something or other….) to my hair --- not all of it; I mainly focused on the new growth and a little along the rest of my hair, and some Citre Shine gel.

4.) I proceeded to braid each section and placed a perm rod on the ends until I was done.

5.) Sat under the dryer for a quick minute so that my hair could dry a little before I put my head on a clean pillow.

When I took down each braid I looked like some monster…what did I do wrong?

i dunno....ive never put gel on my braidouts....but i have to say it looked really good with the scarf!

Lovely, what exactly are you unhappy with?

I was hoping for more defined crimps and such. It looks all bushy to me instead of neatly done. :( I think I need to throw in a picture of how the back looks so you can see the whole thing...

you could try doing cornrows instead of individual braids

Girl I wish... I can't cornrow for the life of me... I have a braider (my good friend) who hooks my hair up! ;) I know cornrowing my hair will turn out better , and more defined but I can't cornrow my own hair (at least not all the way to the back) so that why I did all the individual braids.

I like the color of your hair.Your braid-out good,it takes a lot of trial and error to really get what you want.Your braid out looks so much better then my first..trust me!!

I can give you a few tips...I do braid-outs all the time.

wash and deep condition.
Use a good creamy leave-in and a good detangler..for easier braiding.
Fewer braids the better,I braid my hair in 5 big braids.
I sit under the dryer for about a hour.

for maintaining the style I braid my hair(using my detangler and a little leave-in) in 4 big braids, pin them them on top of my hair and cover with a silk scarve.
My braid-outs last a week.

Also I have to admit your do get better braid-outs with corn rows.

Braid out pics are in my album..good luck.

Lovely, I can't braid worth a lick myself, but my braidouts come out pretty defined. Like Sha said I've never used gel for my braidouts. I normally use a creamy leave in like goldensugar, I also do about 4 braids in my hair, then I allow it to airdry.

Sorry I don't have any advice, but if it helps your braid out looks waaaaaaaaaay better than my first and last one. I haven't had a chance to practice again because I have individuals in my head now. But talk about a hot mess, I didn't even bother taking pictures of mine.

if you can do cornrows but not to the back, try dividing your hair is two halves, from ear to ear. then do the top and the bottom.......if you cant, oh well :ohwell:

Did you let your hair dry all the way before taking the braids out? Was your hair tightly braided or loosely? And were all the braids wet when you braided them?

Do you apply the leave-in to the whole section you are about to braid (in other words, do you saturate it)? Also what are some good leave-in's that you'd suggest?

I let my hair dry over night and for the most part it was about 95% dry, the other 5% accounts for the new growth, but I wasn't too concerned with that. Also, my braids were very snug so thats another reason why I was wondering some sections look this way now. As for how wet me hair was...it was pretty damp, the areas that seemed to have dried before I braided them, I sprayed with water again. I'm guessing my results has something to do with the amount of braids I did and the products I used...

I do apply a creamy leave-in and an oil or serum and do 4 braids. 2 going towards my ears and 2 going towards my back and then I put a roller at the end. I've found that doing cornrows makes the wave pattern better than doing individuals..esepcially near my scalp.

When my hair is freshly washed I apply leave-in all over and then spray with detangler. Then i cornrow my wet hair without using any add'l product.
When I braid my hair up for bed every night I apply detangler and a little leave-in to help comb it out and then I rebraid.

I use ntm leave-in cream with evoo added.
