What are the good shampoos?

Right now I use Pantene Moisturizing Complex and it makes my hair hard. But I justify it by telling myself that the conditioners are supposed to make my hair more soft, not the shampoo. Is that right?

I've always just used what my mom used and this was one product that she uses religiously.

Shampoos without Sodium Lauryl (Laurel) Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Ammonium Lauryl and Laureth Sulfate are less drying. There is a thread on shampoos without sulfates. I'll see if I can find it for you!

Hawaiianhoney,

I think a lot of people really follow what you said. That is, UNTIL they see for themselves that it just doesn't have to be that way.

The advantage of finding a gentle, more moisturizing or balancing shampoo, is that that one thing can make a huge difference in how your hair turns out after it has dried.

Your hair shouldn't feel hard after shampooing. It should feel soft and some people like to have a lot of slip. Personally, I want my hair to be soft and my scalp to feel very clean, not stripped.

A good starting point is try to find cleansing agents in shampoos which are milder AND which your hair and scalp are compatible. Creme of Nature seems to be a widespread shampoo for folks here. I enjoy the regular a lot, but I do not use it all the time because my hair can feel "coated." But, it is gentle, leaves your hair soft, and worth a try.

Be sure to keep track of "alternate" cleansing agents (those other than the sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, and amoniums) which treat your hair and scalp well. Giovanni makes some very gentle shampoos with olefin sulfonate as the major sudsing agent. However, what I found myself was that that one ingredient made my scalp flake. It took me a while to figure that out, too. With Kenra, it's a good moisturizing shampoo, but the sudsing agent there is sodium myreth sulfate. It's supposed to be gentler for your hair because molecules are larger. The Kenra shampoo for dry hair made my scalp go wild. My scalp did not feel clean and my hair felt laden with excessive oils.

Creme Of Nature Shampoo
Aubrey Organics White Camilia & Jasmine Dry Hair Shampoo
Jason Natural Biotin Shampoo

I would have to say:

Cream of Nature (professional for normal)
Aubrey Organics (white camilia and jasmine)
ORS Uplifting Shampoo

Thank you all for all of your suggestions. Now I have something to chew on when I go to the store. As we all know, there are hundreds of choices...and I'm a recovering product junkie, so I need some sort of direction before I make the trip!

Cream of Nature for Dry Hair
Baby Love Conditioning Shampoo...it's gentle on my hair since itz meant for kidz!

Every body seems to LOVE CON but i HATE IT. The white one with the red writing and yellow cap left my hair tangled, stripped and a MESS. The one with the green writing and yellow cap was GREAT on my first use. But after a second time my scalp and hair felt "coated" and "unclean"

Yeah, it does give that coated feeling for me as well. I cannot use it every shampoo.

I'm still on the search for a good shampoo. What do you all think about Optimum? I think that's the one that smells like bubble gum. I'm thinking about picking that one up.

Elucence Moisture Benefits shampoo....I don't usually use it more than twice per month though. I don't know how it would work if I used it more often and was not primarily using conditioner to "wash".

That's interesting EgyptianSand because I had the exact same experience you described with the green and yellow version of CON. My strands are pretty thin so anything that will 'coat' them, will weigh my hair down

Hi! I am new to the Board (I joined on 8/7/03).

Anyway, about my opinion re: good shampoos. I have been using Aveda Brilliant. I really like it, and have used it for several years.

I am still a fan of Elucence. I like the Moisture Benefits shampoo.

I didn't know optimum still made a 'poo. Do they still have the conditioner too?

Supergirl,

Optimum has 2 shampoos and 2 conditioners. I saw them at Walmart earlier today.
