What about petroleum based grease?

I have natural hair type 4a. I have heard so many different things about not putting petroleum on the ends of your hair because it causes breakage. I need to moisterize the ends of my hair especially because they are dry. However, I don't want to do anything to harm my already weak ends. Is this true, or is it different for everyone? What are the best greases that everyone uses?

I find Organis Roots Jojoba oil pomade works well for me and doesn't contain petroleum. Their Carrot oil doesn't have it either but I only use it sparingly as it makes my hair kinda greasy sometimes.

I only stoppped using petroleum based products this year (I used to use Dax, etc)based on too many bad things I've heard or read about them.

Petroleum based grease will not moisturise your ends...they can help seal in moisture and then protect your ends from drying out but they will do nothing to add moisture to your hair.
For moisture you need to look for products that are water based (have water as the first ingredient). The ladies on this board have some great products that they use in their regimine.

One that comes to mind is something BlkMane uses called BB Oil Moisturiser...good moisturising ingredinets.

Hopefully some others will answer and tell you what they use.

Oh how are you wearing your hair? wash and go out natural or in a pressed style?
This will help with product suggestions.

Petroleum coats the hair. That's it. If you need something to PENETRATE your hair-- well grease ain't it.
I found two good ones at drugstore.com: KMS straightening balm which contains lanolin, and modern organics. These are thicker, but I have thick dry hair that needs a heavier oil, esp. between pressed to keep it manageable.
The body shop has a great pomade. It's a tin that's conconut oil and lanolin. It's $7. for just a little bit, but I bought it anyway.

ditto to what valleygirl said. petroleum based products don't provide moisture, but they do seal it in. my product of choice for moisture is curl activator. i used S-Curl for a long time. now i'm on a World of Curls kick again. i don't think it matters which. the main thing is the using...

If I'm not mistaken, I think adrienne uses vaseline on her ends before putting her hair up into a protective style (the famous ponytail)
