Is it better to put the weave on your own hair or use braid extension to prevent damage?

It depends on your hair. If your is thick and can hold the braid through washes, I say just use your own hair. I used to use extensions, but they cause me to itch so much more. So now I just use my own hair; you do have to be a bit more careful when taking it out though
