Wearing hair down...

I am really frustrated with my hair. I prefer to wear it down but whenever I do chunks of my hair separate and fan out. To demonstrate what I'm talking about, it looks like / l l l \ instead of lllll. It's not really thin (although it's not really thick either) and when I finish combing it it's all laying down like I want it to, but w/in 10 minutes I have this fan effect thing going on and I look crazy. I'm wondering if this is happening due to the oil I put in my hair. Has this happened to any of y'all and do you know how I can prevent it or what I'm doing to cause it?

Sounds like too much buildup or that you might need to just put a light serum on your ends to smooth them together.

You may want to try tying on a satin scarf for 20 minutes or so after putting some moisturizer in your hair (no oils). It sounds like you may have some static in your hair which comes from lack of moisture and as HoneyDew said, too much product, mainly oils.

Thanks for the responses. I had a feeling it was the oil, it's the only thing I put on my hair on my hair since CW'ing on Saturday (other than leave in, serum and setting lotion). Any suggestions of a good non oily moisturizer? I have the NTM leave in which is creamy, but I think that has oil in it too.

My hair does this when the set gets old and I have product build-up. Try something moisturizing, but light since your hair is medium thickness. I like Phyto 7.

When was your last trim. I know many people dont want to hear this kind of "trim talk", but this could be a sign that your ends are split or damaged, and may need some trimming. My hair does this when I need a trim. Afterward, my ends lay perfectly.:)

I actually trimmed my hair on Saturday after CW'ing and I am so happy I did! I haven't trimmed in about a year and I was really getting tired of the see through ends so I cut off about 2 inches. My hair looks so much better now and I'm still around armpit. I know the ends are a little uneven but that's ok cause I was planning on cutting off 3 inches when I relax in August... so I'll even it out then when I take this last inch off, but yeah, I just had to do something about them now. But I know it's not the ends' falut because my hair was rising around my ear/chin/nape area

It's definitely the oil. I didn't put any on last night before going to bed and now my hair is laying down more than it was yesterday. But it's still rising a little since it's still on the oily side. Geez, I thought oil was like a daily moisturizer or something, what should I be using instead?

Carolina_belle, you mentioned Phyto 7 (I thought that was a relaxer?) so I'll check that out...

ETA: Oh my, that stuff is over $20 a pop! I'm a student so I don't think that's in my budget right now  Maybe in August when my financial aid comes in :scratchch

What helps me is to use a moisturizer that is water based. Use it lightly though or it will kill your style and/or revert flat-ironed roots. I little should be able to go a long way with the better moisturizers. (i learned this the hard way . :))

When I wear my hair down, I apply about a half dollar sized amount of ORS olive oil all over my hair with more attention on my ends every night and then I wrap it up. It doesnt kill the style at all, surprisingly.:) The next morning its moisturized and still has its bounce and swing.:D

Before you do anything I would suggest clarifying with a apple cide vinegar rinse. So when you add any oil or moisturizer you are not working with previous buildup.
I did this when I wore my hair down this weekend and it worked like a charm.

Nice and bouncy and shiny and touchably soft. It made me wish I would wear my hair down more. But I promptly put it back up after my party
