Washing hair in twists - How-To

Here's what I did last night ladies:

Pre-poo with Amla oil...

1) Add wash concoction in spray bottle. I added baking soda water with my LA Looks conditioner.

2) Spray concoction directly on scalp to cleanse scalp. Do not massage with fingers. This will cause more frizzies.

3) Optional: I used a small bone comb to gently scratch my scalp and particularly in dry scalp areas.

4) Spray concoction on hair strands (if you have any solution left).

5) Let water rinse concoction off. Your strands will get clean too.

6) Apply DC on twists (I didn't like the fact that I couldn't get IN the hair but it's OK).

7) Rinse off very well.

8) Follow step 1) and 2) again but this time, finish with an ACV and Water mix.

9) Rinse very well.

10) Moisturize and seal. I used shea butter and forgot to seal

11) braided twists in 8 sections and curled the ends using perm rollers (?)

I'm not suggesting that you won't get any fuzzies but a LOT less than if you used your fingers to massage the conditioner or shampoo (whichever you use)

Thanks Sonce!

I don't think I can wash my hair w/o massaging my scalp. :nono: While I don't have an applicator bottle, I still apply shampoo to scalp using fingers. Massage the scalps in between the twists. Squeeze the twists during the rinse stage as shampoo runs through them. Apply conditioner to twist leaving the bottom inch untouched. Squeeze to allow conditioner to penetrate twists. Rinse with the same twisting motion. Then dunk in ACV solution for more squeezing but mainly massaging of the scalp.

I'm yet to do that to the twists I have on, but when I had twists just at the front of my head, I did this twice and didn't have to redo the twists. The pics I posted yesterday showed a week old twists that have been through that wash process twice. I don't mind a little fuzz and I don't think it looks that bad. (These are the twists I was wearing as bangs when I had my extensions in.)

How do you do your twists? Do you twist each of the two strands anticlockwise (or clockwise) before wrapping them around each other clockwise (or anticlockwise)?

ETA: To get DC "inside" your braids, just squeeze a bunch of them and voilà!

I literally take two sections and twist them around eachother? I've never thought about it. This weekend, I wore them to weddings and everyone kept asking me how I got mine to look the way they did. I couldn't explain a word to them.

I put enough so when I squeeze I see some oozing out. I just hate not getting in on each individual strand though. Talk about TOO focused on detail!

I'll tell you one thing, my hair looks FIERCE today! I'll see if I can find someone with a cam phone to post pic.

Hmm...After watching the 3-strand twist which didn't involve twisting the hair in each strand first, I wondered if I am the only one that twists hair that way. My twists seem to hold so well through several washes and I wonder if that's the reason why.

I twist my hair the way my grandmother used to weave sisal to make a basket. She'd first make a rope/string by weaving the strings of sisal till she had a roll of it and then use that to weave the basket. It's the same way hairdressers would do twists w/ extensions. They'd even use their thighs like my grandmother does. (OK, hope that didn't give some of you nightmares but it really wasn't as horrible as it may sound.) I'll have to find a way to make a vid showing this.

I believe I get all my strands. What I do is section them and work on a few at a time. I apply the way you apply relaxer on a few twists at a time and squeeze till it oozes out as you say. Then I move onto another part. I think I use way more conditioner than is necessary but I'd rather be sure my hair is well drenched in it, than use less than I need.

Nonie,

Please see if you can send a link to a video showing how these twists can be done or better yet...YOU do it

Yeah, I do it the lazy way...

Nonie, thanks for your tips. I also have to say that this is the FIRST TIME I have ever seen someone on this forum who is truly my hair twin. :yep: Your hair looks beautiful - so shiny and healthy :yep:. I bet the products that work best for your hair will work well for me, too.

I tried to make a vid of myself doing it on my hair but I couldn't get the focus right since I don't have a webcam that is perfectly positioned so I had to bend in front of a digicam propped on the table. (How ghetto eh?) And all I ended up with was a view of my hands doing something but no one could see what. :lachen:

Anyway, since the point was just to demonstrate how I twist, I used a rope that's fraying at the ends to demonstrate. Notice that before I loop the two strands around each other, I first twist them in the same direction and then loop them over each other in a direction opposite to that in which I twisted them. You'll find the strands sort of seem to automatically loop around each other the way you plan them to when they are first twisted one way. I hope it makes sense.

This is the procedure I use too, except for the ACV "dunk". I use a liter size bottle and pour the mix slowly over my head and squeeze as it runs down the hair. I braid the roots of my twists and then separate into two strands, twist and then twist around each other. I agree that the "pre-twist twisting" might be the reason the twists last through washing, and for me 3-4 week wear.

I was talking to a fellow Nikos' cousin about washing hair in twists and she wondered how I am able to do it repeatedly and not get matted hair or knots. So I pointed her to the video I shared previously in this thread on the way I do my twists and promised to make another video to show how easy it is to undo twists when they are done my way (that way).

The twist you see in the video below is of a set I have been wearing for two weeks and have washed them 4 times in that time. I baggy every night and do not use any products on my hair outside of my what I use during my wash. I hope you find the video helpful.

Just wanted to mention that I now braid the base of my twists as that seems to make the base look tidier much longer, which is why you will see me undoing the base a little differently from the main body of the twist.
