So I went to Grandma's house last night for dinner, and I was complaining to her about my recent episodes with dandruff and how badly my hair has been itching (like to the point where I am giving myself scabs from scratching so much)<---I know that sounds bad, but really...I think I need a dermatologist.

Anyhoo, my grandma says, "Has your dandruff been big or small?" I said, "They've been medium size, and I've never had dandruff like this before."

WAIT FOR IT...........................................................................................................

So, my grandma replies, "Oh, your hair is growing!":look::perplexed:ohwell: My sister, then blurts, "No, grandma! It's because her hair is just dirty!" :lachen: Ladies, I wanted to laugh so bad, but I didn't even want to get in that conversation with my grandmother....she's funny. I love her.

Then send some of that danruff over here...i need it for my edges lol lol j/k

That's funny!!! My sister had HORRID dandruff when we were kids and my grandmother swears "that's why that chile has kept all that hair all her life.":lachen: Sometimes you cannot do anything but laugh when things like that are said.

Have you recently changed products? I know when I use certain products my scalp gets itchy and dry.

Nope! I want to say as soon as I gained like 3 inches of hair, I noticed the dandruff. I'm really at my wits end with it. I normally keep my hair styled for two weeks, and then wash and all. I am on my second week, and planned to wash on Saturday. BUT, I had to take my hair out last night and wash because the itch was unbearable. I'm truly not exaggerating. Starting next week, I'm going to wash weekly and perhaps, I will notice a difference.

I'm currently searching for a dermatologist, also.

My mother and I had a similar discussion the other day!

She's in her late 70s and said when she was growing up, some people would take the dandruff from a long-haired girl and put it on a short-haired girl's scalp. They called it "growing dandruff" and thought the length could be transferred. *threw up a little bit in my mouth*

eta: Mom didn't believe it, she was just telling me about crazy stuff she heard about Black hair back in the day.

*Sigh* So the myth still exist.

This reminds me of another myth one of my relatives told me when I used to have dandruff really bad (relaxed) as a teenager. She tells me:

"Relaxer will eat up all of that dandruff, it means you need another one."

Really? I just got one 2 weeks ago.

Im natural now.

I use to have that same problem OP and found out it was from the Shampoo. I had flakes as big as my fingernail bed and sometimes it would stick and you could see it on my scalp, and I had terrible terrible scabs!! UGH.
I used an ACV rinse and it knocked that COMPLETELY out with one wash.

Another one of my favorites to use is a Shakakai Bar, or Witch Hazel. I never had problems again after that.

I tried doing an ACV rinse once, and I wasn't sold on it--perhaps, I'll try it again :ohwell:. I wish hair problems didn't exist....

Questions:

Are you relaxed, texlaxed, natural?
How many times a month do you wash and condition your hair?
What products do you use??

How long did you keep it on?? It could take more than one ACV wash depending on how bad it is.

You could also try the Witch Hazel; no dilution necessary.

I used it when I was relaxed.

I hear sulfate free shampoo works. I have never used it, but hopefully someone will chime in and let us know

Questions:

Are you relaxed, texlaxed, natural? Au Naturale
How many times a month do you wash and condition your hair? Wash and DC 2x a month

What products do you use?? Poo w/ Shea Moisture Black Soap
DC w/ Nexxus Humectress Ultimate Moisturizing Condish

Moisturizers (whichever I feel like using):
KCKT
Bee Mine Luscious Balanced Cream Moisturizer

Seal:
Castor Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, or Olive Oil

When I twist my hair, I generally use Nature's Blessing on the length of my hair, too.

I recently started using Tea Tree Oil because it's been said that it aids in itchy scalp.

Honestly, I've changed my regimen a few times. When I first started my natural journey I was using ORS Creamy Aloe Poo and their Moisturizing DC...but it did nothing for me...so I've been on my current regimen for a while.

I hate that I was eating when I read this thread.

Sorry :giggle:

5 minutes?? :lachen: I think it takes a little more time than that lol.

The Shea Moisture black soap.... do the ingredients only have natural products? IS it PURE shea butter and black soap?

IMO, If it has more than Shea and Black Soap, I don't trust any product that claims to have shea in it yet I look on the back and see hexbutymenproblyowhathtehellisthis?oxidecone ingredients in them....and then Shea butter last. Or they are mixed with other artificial ingredients I can't understand.
If I see something that says Shea and Black Soap. I expect to have Shea and Black Soap as my only ingredients..with the exception of other natural ingredients.

I'd say replace that shampoo for a week or two with ACV or Witch Hazel to see what happens.

Again, thats just my notion.

My dandruff flakes are always pretty big. I had one once the size of my thumb nail I have a friend now that says one of these days she is going to come to my house and scratch my scalp.

I hide it very well by wearing buns. My SO noticed this weekend when we were taking a nap that I had lots of dandruff. I am just glad he wasn't grossed out by it.

My scalp got pretty bad. I had a few flakes but what really drove me bats was the itching. I resorted to Nizoral shampoo diluted with a 2:1 ratio. I wash my hair in plaits so I can really get to my scalp without tangling my hair and getting too much poo on my strands. I apply, scrub,(let it sit on my scalp for 5 mins) rinse, and repeat. I don't like the medicinal smell of the Nizoral so I follow it a quick swipe of my favorite rinse out condish, Tresemme Naturals Moistirizing _Silicone free. I usually do a DC overnight, so that's my next step.

My itches are all but none existant and I don't have anymore flakes. HTH

Well the story is quite funny but on a serious note... Try typing in seborrheic dermatitis and then dandruff and then dry scalp. All are very similar but the pics can help see which you may have. A dermatologist would be good but before you go if you haven't already try a tea tree shampoo like giovanni or paul mitchell or if you don't mind scalp medication try t gel. I'm saying this because that's what they'll tell you first. Then most likely give you prescription nizoral aka ketaconozole or dermasmooth... For me all that didn't work but I started with dandruff and then got sd... Your condition sounds like sudden dandruff so I'd say try hairever 1 scalp cleanse if it is dandruff and then a moisturizing gentle shampoo.

Thanks, Ladies, for the advice! I've been going through this dandruff thing for awhile.

I have written some of what you all have mentioned in my hair journal, and hopefully, I'll notice some changes.

How long do you keep an ACV on your scalp? 30 minutes? an hour?

:lachen::lachen::lachen: I GUFFAWED!!!! :lachen::lachen::lachen:

OP watch what you use and how your scalp responds. My hair loves cones but my scalp doesn't... so I have to be careful with co-washing... well moreso what I cowash with.

I left it on for 30 minutes, rinsed, followed with a deep condition.
You may need to leave it on a bit longer ( or do it twice) depending on how severe the problem is.
I used a nozzle bottle to apply it directly to the scalp.
Either or is good (ACV/Witch Hazel)

Somehow the properties regulated the PH in my scalp and I never had anymore dandruff problems again.

I used to use Nicrozil and the medicated shampoos, even the prescribed ones, but once I stopped using them, my dandruff came back 3 times worse.
