Warning for my fellow longhairs..

Stay away from those teeny-tiny (albeit impossibly cute) straw curls! I got a friend to do my hair this way a little over a week ago. She did a great job and my hair looked great. It came out EXACTLY the way I wanted it to. I hugged her afterward and told her that I would definitely- definitely, be back again. The style lasted a little over a week and it was simple, no manipulation or anything. All I did was oil my scalp and spritz my hair to keep the sheen. I put a silk bonnet on it each night as well. Just a couple of days ago I started using S-Curl to loosen the tight curls because I had an appointment with my usual hairdresser. Now I didn't think it would be such a big deal for her to was my hair and detangle it as usual but boy, was I wrong!!! Those straw curls had my hair sooo tangled up! It took a gi-normous effort to remove all the tangled (plus shed) hair. At one point my stylist and the shampoo person were working my head at the same time. Needless to say I lost alot more hair than I should have.:ohwell: My stylist says that my hair is way too long for straws and that I should stick to spiral curls (avoiding the smallest size there, too). All this time I wondered why she didn't do straws. Hmph, call this a lesson learned.

How about the flexirods? How did you keep your hair from being smooshed at nite? That is my problem... The last time I did them 2 years ago, I wet my hair and used good old CON to detangle.... and did a protein treatment.

HTH

Girl teach away because I can't put rollers in my hair for 2 hours and then only where the style for two days. I want to do this because I work out and I am tired of wearing ponytails.

Well I'm glad you posted this because I was thinking about asking my stylist to do a strawset at my next appointment. I'm sure that would've been a disaster because my hair is natural and at bottom of brastrap. Thanks for the warning.

I used to straw set frequently, but not without manipulation. I moisturized the ends with my concoction (butters, etc. ) as I stretched the set each day. I used the largest. longest straws I could find (try bubble tea or monster straws). Before I finally washed, I conditioned, concetrating on the last half. The conditioner concoction stayed in for at least 30 minutes before the water touched my head.

I always had some tangles, but no major losses. My curly/nappy hair tangles to if I do not clear the shed hairs regularly. I can no longer use most straws because my hair is too long when stretched. Bubbles might still work but I ran out of my stash. Flexi rods are too heavy for my tastes, to get the look I like.

Off topic: Have you seen the new large flexi rods at Sally's?

Sorry to hear about your ordeal. I NEVER do curls that tiny. Looks GREAT BUT I KNOW I would tangle pretty easily. I would do them if I WAS NOT sleeping on them at all (so a one day thing) otherwise NOPE. I can see the issues froma mile away..lol.

Oh and also scurl tends to give me knots. Make sure that was not the case in your case.

I was about to post the same thing...about doing a prepoo treatment for a long while...I would use a cheap conditioner like pantene...something that has really good slip. I would detangle with my hands first then a Jilbere comb very very carefully not forcing anything (while I detangle I add loads and loads of conditioner and stand under the stream of water because the force of the water does a good job of detangling). My hair is not nearly as long as yours though so maybe it's the length that caused your problem.

Sorry to hear this happened to you.

Lol BeyondCute, I'm still getting mines

I'm just too hardheaded and I HAVE to see for myself. Those things are so cute too.

I think If I rinse VERY well. pre-poo, shampoo well, and use a conditioner with a lot of slip I'll be aiight.

We'll just have to see. I have to experience stuff for myself before taking other's word for it...

Once again how are we keeping the curls from looking smooshed? I have to sleep at nite and I don't want to work for hours just for it to be jacked 2 days later.
