appropriate place to post this, but here goes...

My hair is chemically straightened. I don't hot curl or flat iron my hair, so some of my curly texture is still in effect.

My problem is, the longer my hair grows, the straighter my hair becomes.

I want to get my curls back, but I don't want to rely on wet-sets, which don't last.

I've thought about perming my hair the way "white" people and "others" do, to achieve a curlier look.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

If your hair is chemically relaxed if you used a white persons perm (which is Thio based) your hair would fall out. Please do not do this! Some of the women here have had success with the John Frieda Relax Ripple Effect Wave Maker to enhance their natural curls. The problem is that when you got your hair chemically relaxed you should have gotten a texturizer to only slightly relax the curl in your hair. Unfortunately (in your case) the longer your hair gets the further the curl is stretched which loosens it, this also happens to people who may be a 4a with a TWA, but a 3C when it gets to shoulder length.

Hope that helped /images/graemlins/weird.gif

Thanks for that Mahogani, so even though my hair

already has one chemical on it, a relaxer, I can put the white people's version of "perm" over it and get the curly look? This is what I'm unsure of. Thanks again...

Ms_Kenesha

Tell me about it! It's very loose. What exactly is a texturizer? I discussed with my stylist the type of "look" I wanted before he did anything 2 years ago, but I can't remember if we discussed "texturizing" the hair.

Can a texturizer be applied to new growth only and get a different look as time passes? Thanks for letting me know about white perm. I really had no idea! You're a lifesaver! And a hairsaver!

NO!!!!!!!!! /images/graemlins/blush.gif

Sorry. Didn't mean to shout, but I don't want you to go bald.

Kenesha's advice was on point. Relaxing your hair and then curling it is redundant. Besides, relaxer + curly perm = a balding unhappy women. Those two chemicals cannot mix.

If you like the curly look then you want to stop getting full-blown relaxers and start texturizing your hair. There are a lot of people who do that on here, so I'm sure that they could help you.

No blossom don't do it. /images/graemlins/mad.gif Do not put any chemical on top of your already relaxed hair it will eventually fall out. YOu should never put a curly perm over a relaxer or vice versa.

Re: Ms_Kenesha

A texturizer is a mild relaxer left on the hair for a shorter period of time to stretch the natural curl in the hair. The Curve Salon in NYC specializes in this process, but they call their texturizer a silkener. On their site you can see a lot of good before and afters.

So BrightEyes and Ms_Kenesha...

I would have to basically shave my head and start over if I want to begin texturizing? Is texturizing the same as a curly perm?

Thanks again... I may be DOOMED to having straight hair!

Re: So BrightEyes and Ms_Kenesha...

You can transition from your relaxed hair to texturized hair by getting the new growth texturized and gradually cutting the relaxed portion (like an inch a month) until you have cut all the relaxed portion off. What is your hair type?

Re: So BrightEyes and Ms_Kenesha...

My hair is a 4 something... Can you recommend a "texturizer" or a name brand of a texturizer so I'll know what to tell my stylist? Thanks, Ms.

Hi Blossom,
Welcome to the board! /images/graemlins/smile.gif I wouldn't recommend putting a chemical over another chemical. Have you given any thought to Ms Kenesha's advice about transitioning? If you want to try another chemical, that's the best way to go. If you are really daring you could cut the whole relaxer out. (Only if you can stomach this. Not everyone can handle such a radical move.) /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi Blossom,

Welcome! /images/graemlins/grin.gif Since you already have a relaxer, it wouldn't be good to put another chemical service on your hair...you will end up with no hair! /images/graemlins/frown.gif To get a curly look try the straw set or using the perm rods. You can also let your hair grow out or when it's time for your next touch up get a mild relaxer that won't get the hair completely straight.

Thanks Pebbles, Ms_Kenesha & HairFanatic

Ms. Kenesha, I checked out the Curve Salon site, and I don't think the texturizer is for me either. It's the same as what HairFanatic described. A mild relaxer.

No, Pebbles, no way could I cut it all off in one swoop! That would be something, though. Ha!

I will try the perm rods (wet-set) and be content. I'm just glad I found this board and asked questions before proceeding.

This is a great board. Hope to visit more often. Thanks for your advice, ladies. Peace...

[/ QUOTE ] LOL, I do understand. It is definately not for the fainthearted. I've done it a couple of times when I wanted to get rid of a relaxer, but I know that not everyone can handle that. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Thanks Pebbles, Ms_Kenesha & HairFanatic

If you want a curly look the perm rods can work. But I find that with me the flexi-rods are much easier than the perm rods. I can never get the little clip to go in and stay tight.
Oh and welcome to the board!!! /images/graemlins/clap.gif /images/graemlins/wave.gif

Blossom ,i misread your post i'm very sorry i thought you did not have a perm at all!!!! /images/graemlins/look.gif please do not perm over perm i would use john freda's ripple effect to acheive a long lasting curly look. please forgive me /images/graemlins/frown.gif
