very discouraged...(another dominican salon sob story)

So, I went got my blowout. My ends were in such bad shape I couldn't even twist them without breakage- i figured I needed a trim.

1.The blowout turnout itself was horrible. It was a big puff. If I didn't request for her to flat iron it afterwards I would've left the salon with a slightly lowered afro.

2. She CUT my hair. ugggh it pains me just retyping this experience.

Her skill with the blowdryer was impeccable at first. I didn't feel a thing but towards the end she just acted like she didnt care. The heat was sooooo hot! I specifically asked her to stop and just flat iron the front-- she tried to coax me while she continued to blowdry the front!!

She put nothing on my hair... no heat protection- nothing (no hair products-at all not even spray at the end.

To top it off- she raised my price to $40 when she told $35 at the beginning. I was READY to set that salon on fire. Needless to say my hair being on the top of my shoulders from brastap is devastating. I don't think I will continuing my hair journey. It'll take too long. Yes I know- weak excuse. But I am sure others can relate with me how long it takes to get your hair past your shoulders.

OMG, I'm sorry you went through this, try to stay calm and just think of it this way you now should have fresh unsplit ends to work with, so it will grow in thicker. This is exactly why I don't go to anyone to do my hair, but I have not gotten a prof. cut or style in 1.5 years.

Your experience sounds just awful!

Why did she cut so much? Did you request a cut or a trim and she got carried away or something?

I checked your album and your hair looks very nice, but I know that nice looking hair isnt much of a consolation. After all, you went from BSL to just on your shoulders. :(

By giving up on your journey, what exactly do you mean? Are you no longer going to be natural or do you give up on growing your hair out? Either way, dont let some scissor happy stylist get in the way of your goals. Hair grows back!

I found what salon it was in your post under salon reviews. I am truly sorry that you had such a bad experience. I have been to that salon twice and I always had good results. Keep your head up.

So sorry you had a horrible experience with an incompetent stylist! Ugh, thats' aggrevating, but your hair does look nice and it will grow back soon with some TLC.

I totally understand how you feel. I went into a Dominican salon for a trim and came out with 4 inches missing and it was asymmetrical!  Needless to say, I stopped going to that salon, and I make sure I pay close attention if I ask for a trim. My hair has grown back since then, and I think it's much healthier. Honestly, I think your hair looks great. This is just a setback, not the end. You grew your hair BSL before, so you can definitely do it again. Don't give up!

Take it from someone who had almost reached bra-strap and had stylist-induced damage that eventually forced her to cut it to her ear: Your hair will grow back! I just kept my hair cornrowed and "ignored" it for awhile. I put away all my silk scrunchies (couldn't even make a ponytail), hair sticks and claw clips. It was too depressing to look at hair accessories I could no longer use.
When I got a little below chin length I could stand to deal with my hair again and I'm back on my way. You will be too.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience. But even though your hair is at shoulder level, you can quickly gain back those few lost inches by the end of the year. And from looking at your photos, and please don't get offended when I say this, it did not look like you were at bra strap length yet. If you can touch with your hair, that is a good indication your hair is at bra strap int the back. But I know that is little consolation with the inches she did cut off. But they were thin hairs and her cutting them at the demarcation line (I think that is what it is called) actually makes your hair look thicker. Just massage your scalp nightly for the next month or so to encourage circulation. Your scalp somehow knows when a hair has been cut and will put extra energy into helping it to grow back to the point where it was cut. And while those hairs grow so will the rest of your hair. By the time your cut hair gets back to the length it was before you will notice that your hair looks thicker than it did before at that same length.

PLEASE do not give up on your haircare goals. Your hair, though it was cut, is absolutely GORGEOUS! It's thick, shiny and healthy and imagine how amazing it will be by the end of 2006 if you stick you your goals. This is a setback and disappointing but it is only TEMPORARY! I am wishing you all the best and speedy, happy hair growing girl! :p

Thanks guys for everything. I am just still a little upset and thinking about the amount of energy and time it will take for my hair to grow back (my hair takes sooo long to grow!!) and I really dont know what to do from here...

Sorry to hear about your experience. I know it sucks but your hair looks good and it will grow back. And like mentioned, at least your ends are thick and healthy. After seeing this, I'm not getting a professional trim/cut to even my ends up, it's settled. I'm planning on getting a dominican blow out at the end of the month.

Don't give up, caribbean_dream.

Enjoy the pretty style you have right now- your hair looks very healthy and full! You'll be able to style in minutes and you don't have to worry about marathon detangling sessions at the moment.

After you've had some fun, make plans for the future to grow it back. I had a pretty serious cut last summer and I started to miss my length. So I started using Surge, I've experimented more with products to keep my hair ultra-moisturized, and I'm more consistent with my hair routine in general. It looks like you already know how to do a great protective style (twists) so you are well on your way!

HHG!

Yes, it does. Your hair has a growing pattern. That is why some of will get the single or double tails to our hair. If you cut the tail off, the hair their will grow back before the rest of it can catch up. That why you seem to always have a tail. The only different is as you cut it and continue to let it grow back and cut it again, the rest of your hair is growing faster trying to catch up. At least that's the way it does for me. If I don't cut my tail off, it just gets longer and longer. I let mine grow almost a foot one time before I cut it.

So sorry, boo. :( But it's stories like this that have kept me out of salons since 1989. It'll come back..you now have the tools (mental, physical and emotional) of how to care for healthy hair. Even if you "give up" all of the strenuous work you put in, you know what NOT to do...that's important.

I am so sorry that happened to you, but your hair is still beautiful. It is so healthy looking and thick. I can't wait till I get to your status.

ETA: I may have to rethink about getting a blowout. My hair is so thin right now, I don't know if my hair can handle the heat.

Please don't give up Caribbean Dream! You are actually one of my natural hair inspirations :)! Your hair is beautiful, thick and healthy now, and like the others said, just imagine where your hair will be in a few months with such a great starting point!

This is so sad, I just don't understand how they did everything the opposite of what I've watched them do, it sounds like her skills have fell off. I just don't understand why she cut so much of you hair off. and didn't apply a heat protectant, or leave-in, she did everything the opposite of what I have watched her do on natural and relaxed hair, plus she alwaaaaaaaaaaaaays flat iron the hair after the blow-out, I wonder why she was't going to flat iron your hair if you didn't ask. They hate poofy hair, they like it to be super flat, when my cousin got her hair done she didn't want it flat ironed just curled under w/the round curling irons and she kept saying it was too poofy in the roots, but she had a fresh relaxer. anyway just don't give up on your journey, your hair will continue grow, so please don't let this stop you, I feel bad for advising you to go there, I just never seen anything like this there, it's hard for me to understand I'll have to let my mother know, Liz has been her stylist for over 3 yrs.
