I've been trying to grow my hair evenly for over a year, but I keep having the same problem. The left side of my hair is 3 inches shorter than the rest and I'm thinking about cutting the back to be even with that side. Now, the rest of my hair is fine, it's just that one stubborn side that doesn't want to "catch up" with the rest of my hair.

Does anyone else experience this?? Should I first reach my goal and then keep an even trim, or just trim it all now? I've got about 3 inches to go to reach my goal.

I don't think you should cut. You have one side only 3 inches shorter. That's 3, 6 or a few more months of hard work.

That side could slower for a number of reasons, but if you even it all up and it still grows slow then what are you going to do. Hair doesn't grow evenly anyway so you'd always be cutting it back to even up. If you wanna trim it that badly then cut it back a lil like 1/4 or 1/2 an inch a time not a whole 3 inches which aren't even damaged. Remember we have a maximun growth potential before the hair sheds, so you'd be getting rid of it for no real necessary reason.

Thanks Londondiva for your insight. It just irks me when I see every other part of my hairgrowth doing well, but it's just that one side that grows so slow.

You're welcome

I wouldn't stress it too much. Put it up or in a bun or something then you don't have to focus on it. I'm gonna even up when I get to waist length or close to it. As long as the ends are healthy I'm not stressing on it too much.

Yep you're right! My ends are healthy and I have no split ends. I hope to be at waist length by next year, then I'll opt to keep it trimmed evenly.

Great thread!!! I agree that growing out hair to desired length THEN evening up is best... I'm sure you're the only one who really even notices it.

Thanks beana3! You know that we're our own worst critic, but this just drives me nuts! Okay, I'm going to wait until next June 2004 and THEN start to even the hair out. Thanks for your encouragement!

no problem, you're hair is so pretty and sleek looking. You've made a lot of progress, don't cut it for this reason.

I have a weak/shorter side and i obsess over it and no one even notices it but me!! I have also evened my hair up before and it has grown back in its usual one side is longer than the other pattern.

Agreed!

I wouldn't cut it, I had the same problem and wet to get a trim to minimize the appearance of breakage in the front and even up the back. Now instead of my hair being shorter on the left it is shorter on the right and I have a tail.

CBG you have a tail ontop of having uneven sides?

Have you been to the doctor about that yet?

I'm sorry I'm stupid, I'm just playing, the way you flung it on the end of that sentence had me laughing.

I'm in no way laughing about your hair BTW.

No your not alone. I too suffer from uneven sides and I finally figured out that thta's just the way my hair grows. I've tried cutting to get it evened up, but to no aval, it just grow back the same uneven way. so I will let it grow out more and slowy trim to give it a neat look. But, not all at one time.

Cami and Honeycomb719, I am so glad to know that I am not the only one who suffers from this problem! My left side is shorter and a year ago I cut the right side to even it up, but whaddaya know . . . the right side is longer once again. I just wear my hair in styles that makes the length discrepancy less obvious. Meanwhile, I take care to be extra gentle when combing out the left side so that I am not increasing the breakage. Good luck, ladies, in evening things up.

My left side is longer, but my right side is thicker. It bothers me, but no one else ever notices it unless I point it out to them like an idiot

Cami, don't even bother to cut your hair if it is healthy. I too, battled the same thing, and once I cut mine, one side continued to grow back faster than the other, a complete waste of time. Wait until once the shortest of your hair has reached your hair goal before you decide to even it all up.

Cami I have had this problem for 3 years now.. I believe it all came from bad touch up,my hair was always thick and even all the way around, not only is it shorter, it is thinner(on the left side).I always cut the right side every couple of weeks.. it grows back so fast. The left side just slowly drags along.. I eventually cut both sides to about chin length because I was tired of looking at it. I am not so much worried about my hair being shorter, just looking healthier

I have this issue as well, although it is not drastic. Usually my hair is in twists, ponytails, or a similar protective style. Next time I get it cornrowed I plan to go "Alicia Keys" style and have it curve around my head to one side--the longer side!

my left side is thinner and a good 3 inches shorter. it also bothers me. last year my stylist cut 3 inches to try to even it out. i just relaxed after wearing protecitve styles. yep, same thing left side is hanging and swinging. i'm going to take you ladies advice. i will cut once i reach my hair goals. i work to hard to keep starting over.
